
Track and field returns to action at Minnesota Open

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University indoor track and field team had a long month off between competitions. On Saturday, the Huskies proved they're back and better than ever, as they competed at the University of Minnesota's Minnesota Open.
St. Cloud State excelled in both the track and field events, as several individuals recorded top-10 finishes. Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East) was the top sprinter for the Huskies as she recorded top-3 finishes in both the 60 and 200 meter dashes. In the 60, Baynes was St. Cloud State's top finisher, as she came in third place with a time of 7.86 in finals. She was even better in the 200 meter dash. Baynes won the event behind a season best time of 26.17, winning the event by nearly a full two tenths of a second.
Emelia Burris (Wooddale, Ill. / Fenton) continued her strong start to the season. The redshirt freshman came in fourth in the 160 meter dash with a time of 7.89 and was also strong in the long jump. Burris finished in third with a jump of 5.26 meters.
Isabelle Simdorn (Apple Valley, Minn. / Rosemount), Cassidy Lackovic (Lake in the Hills, Ill. / Huntley) and Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) also recorded top-8 finishes in either the 100 or 200 meter dashes Saturday afternoon. Simdorn was the third Husky to finish in the top-8 in the 100, as she finished in eighth with a season-best time of 9.04. Lackovic and Brown finished seventh and eighth in the 200 dash with times of 27.67 and 27.74 respectively.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Faith Lubner (Reedville, Wis. / Reedville) and Leighten Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandinavia) finished in fourth and fifth place respectively with times of 9.32 and 9.62.
St. Cloud State's success continued in the mid-distance and distance events. Autum Shurbert-Hetzel (Stevens Points, Wis. / Stevens Point) and Clara Welhouse (Green Bay, Wis. / Southwest) took seventh and ninth in the 800 meter run with times of 2:30.78 and 2:33.27. Chrissy Lofgren (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) finished in 11th in the 3000 meter run (10:49.17) while teammate Annika Juenemann (Dover, Minn. / Dover-Eyota) finished in 22nd with a time of 11:16.15.
The Huskies won the 4x400 meter relay in dominating fashion, as the team of Brown, Welhouse, Lackovic and Shurbert-Hetzel led the team to a top place finish with a time of 4:16.41. The time was over a second faster than Minnesota-Duluth's top tema, which finished in 4:17.50.
In addition to their success on the track, the Huskies recorded even more top-8 finishes in the field events. Shantelle Des Marais (Pipestone, Minn. / Pipestone) took seventh in high jump thanks to her 1.45 meter jump, while freshman Kalli Jo Klocke (Hayfield, Minn. / Hayfield) dazzled in pole vault. The first year came in second behind a vault of 3.05 meters. Temmate Haley Kelvington (Foley, Minn. / Foley) came in fifth with a 2.60 meter vault.
St. Cloud State recorded five top-8 finishes in long jump, while Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) and Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) went 1-2 in triple jump. Jungwirth took second in both long jump (5.30m) and triple jump (11.28m), while Taylor won triple jump with a 11.35 meter jump. The sophomore also took sixth in long jump.
Annie Farlardeau (Grand Rapids, Minn. / Grand Rapids) and Dacoda Zimmerman (Racine, Wis. / Horlick) continued their impressive rookie seasons with top-10 finishes in both shot put and weight throw. Farlardeau came in fourth in shot put with a throw of 12.27 meters, while Zimmerman was sixth with a throw of 12.09 meters. The two finishes sevenths and ninth in weight throw, with Farlardeau recording a season best throw of 13.39 meters for a seventh place finish.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, January 18 when they travel to Brookings, South Dakota for the SDSU Division II Invite.
