BROOKINGS, SD – The St. Cloud State University women's track and field team have found quite a bit of success in the early stages of the 2018-19 indoor season. On Friday, those successes continued as the Huskies competed in their first scored meet of the season. Thanks to several outstanding performances, St. Cloud State took fifth as a team with 51 total points.
The Huskies earned big points in several field events, thanks to two top-5 finishes from Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake). The junior continued her strong start to the season by winning triple jump by a landslide, jumping a full-fledged 11.51 meters in the competition. Jungwirth also finished fourth in long jump thank to her jump of 5.28 meters.
Fellow jumpers Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) and Leighton Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandinavia) also placed in their respective events Friday afternoon. Fischer finished sixth in long jump with a jump of 5.04 meters to along with her 12th place finish in the 60m hurdles (9.70), while Taylor placed in both the long jump and triple jump events for the third consecutive week. The sophomore finished in second behind Jungwirth in triple jump with a 11.11m mark and took eighth in long jump behind a 4.98 meter jump.
In addition to these, St. Cloud State tallied points with other top-8 finishes. In the sprint events, Emelia Burris (Wooddale, Ill. / Fenton) and Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East) continued to lead the charge with top-8 finishes. Burris finished seventh in the 60m dash with a time of 7.82 before taking fifth in the 200 with a season best time of 25.69. Baynes just missed on a top-8 finish in the 60m dash, coming in 10th behind a time of 7.88. She did recover with a fourth place finish in the 200 thanks to her season best time of 25.69.
Faith Lubner (Reedsville, Wis. / Reedsville) was the final sprinter to card a top-8 finish, as she took eight in the 60m hurdles behind a time of 9.34.
The Huskies success carried over to the distance events, as Autum Shurbert-Hetzel (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point) and Chrissy Lofgren (Stewartville, Minn. / Stewartville) both recorded top-8 performances. Lofgren especially had a day to remember, as she recorded a personal record (PR) time in the 5000 meter run. Her PR time of 18:31.57 was a PR by nearly a full minute and was good enough for a fourth place finish. Teammate Annika Juenemann (Dover, Minn. / Dover-Eyota) finished seventh in the same race with a PR time of 19:06.62.
Shurbert-Hetzel also had a day to remember, as she, like Lofgren and Juenemann, carded a PR time in her respective race and a top-8 finish. The senior finished eighth in the 1000 meter run thanks to her PR time of 3:12.79.
St. Cloud State also saw several student-athletes record either season bests or PRs in other events. In shot put, Dominique Buechel (Chilton, Wis. / Chilton) and Ashley Kobernusz (Holdingford, Minn. / Holdingford) both recorded season-bests with throws of 11.73m and 10.81m respectively. Lauren Julian (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview) recorded a PR in weight throw at 12.48m, while Dacoda Zimmerman (Racine, Wis. / Horlick) recorded a season best throw of 11.10m in the same event.
Thanks to these and several other outstanding performances, the Huskies finished in fifth place as a team, tallying 51 total points. St. Cloud State will return to action on Friday January 25 and January 26 when the team competes in the Mark Shuck Open at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota.
