St. Cloud State finishes fifth at Mark Schuck Open

MANKATO, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's track and field team was once again impressive at its latest indoor track and field meet. For the second consecutive week, the Huskies carded yet another top-5 finish at as a team, this time at the Mark Schuck Open in Mankato, Minnesota. Thanks to multiple top-8 finishes by individuals, including one individual win, St. Cloud State finished fifth as a team with 54 total points.
The Huskies strong weekend got off to a hot start, as Leighten Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandinavia) took third in the women's indoor pentathlon behind a score 3136 points. The sophomore won the 800 meter run and carded a second place finish in shot to highlight her two days at the Mark Schuck open and earn six points towards St. Cloud State's overall team score.
In the sprint events, Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East) earned four points towards the team's overall score with a fifth place finish in the 60 meter dash. After racing 7.80 in prelims, Baynes edged out Mackenzie Woodard of Minnesota State in finals, finishing in fifth with a time of 7.83. Her teammate Emelia Burris (Wooddale, Ill. / Fenton) also scored points for the Huskies thanks to her sixth place finish in the 200 meter dash behind a time of 25.77.
Chrissy Lofgren (Stewartville, Minn. / Stewartville) continued her impressive and dominant start to the indoor season with another individual win. The junior won the 1000 meter run behind a time of 3:10.39, a time that was over a full minute faster than the second place finisher out of Sioux Falls. Lofgren was also a member of St. Cloud State's Distance Medley Relay team, which took second behind Winona State. The team of Autum Shurbert-Hetzel (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area), Clara Welhouse (Green Bay, Wis. / Southwest), Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) and Lofgren clocked a time of 13:02.41 to finish comfortably in second place behind the Warriors.
The Huskies dominance in the field events continued, as Burris, Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) and Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) all carded top-8 finishes in long jump. Burris was the highest finishing student-athlete from St. Cloud State, as she took second in the event behind a personal best jump of 5.67 meters. Jungwirth was not far behind, as she took third with a jump of 5.30 meters, while Taylor finished fifth with a jump of 5.16 meters. Taylor also recorded a fifth place finish in triple jump thanks a jump of 11.15 meters.
Thanks to these and several other top performances, St. Cloud State finished in fifth as a team with 54 total team points. The Huskies will return to action on February 2 when they once again travel to Mankato, Minnesota for the Ted Nelson Classic.
