
Track and field takes fifth at Ted Nelson Classic

MANKATO, MINN. – There's a familiar theme to the St. Cloud State University track and field indoor season. For the third consecutive week, the Huskies finished in the top-5 as a team at their respective meet, this time, the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minnesota. Thanks to several top-8 finishes and personal record (PR) performances, St. Cloud State finished fifth as a team with 41 total points.
Emelia Burris (Wooddale, Ill. / Fenton) put together her best weekend of the season this year, as she took second in the 60 meter dash. In prelims, the sophomore earned the second seed in the race, running a season best time of 7.72. She then shaved .02 seconds in the finals, racing to a second place finish with yet another season best time of 7.70.
Burris didn't just have success on the track. She also recorded a second place finish in long jump thanks to another season best performance. Burris jumped well beyond her seed, flying a season best 5.55 meters, which was good enough for second place.
Shortly behind was teammate Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / East). For the third straight week, Baynes recorded a top-8 finish in the 60 meter dash, coming in fifth with a time of 7.83 in the finals. The sophomore also scored two points for the Huskies in the 200 meter dash with her seventh place finish.
Faith Lubner (Reedsville, Wis. / Reedsville) was the final sprinter for St. Cloud State to record a top-8 finish. The sophomore was outstanding in prelims of the 60 meter hurdles, as she earned a spot in the finals with a PR time of 9.04 in the race. He finished in seventh place overall thanks to her time 9.17. Lubner also came in fifth in long jump with a jump of 5.35 meters.
Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) was the lone St. Cloud State student-athlete to record a top-8 finish in the 400 meter dash, coming in eight with a season best time of 1:01.48. Her teammate Cassidy Lackovic (Lake in the Hills, Ill. / Huntley) wasn't far behind, as she just missed the top-8 with a time of 1:02.01.
Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) and Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) continued their impressive seasons in triple jump, as they came in third and sixth place respectively. Jungwith finished in third place thanks to her jump of 11.37 meters, while Taylor finished sixth with a jump of 11.03 meters.
Thanks to these top-8 performances, the Huskies finished in fifth place as a team with 41 total points. St. Cloud State will return to action on Saturday, February 9 when the team competes at Saint John's University.
