ST. CLOUD, Minn. – In dramatic fashion for the second time in the same day, the St. Cloud State softball team (7-1) prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat non-conference opponent, the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers (2-7).
After leading by three after three innings, the Huskies allowed the Lopers to rally back and hold a one run lead though the fourth. Morgan Emmans' two-run home run in the fifth inning would put St. Cloud State back on top until the top of the seventh inning.
A St. Cloud State error and walk in the top of the seventh allowed the Lopers to put two runners in scoring position when UNK's Sara Sempek doubled to bring home two runs and give Nebraska-Kearney a one run lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Morgan Emmans drew a one-out walk to start a rally in the Huskies' half of the seventh inning. A double in the gap from Alexis Jacobs would advance Emmans to third. Anna Roth would come up and put the ball in play to allow for Emmans to score on a bang-bang play at the plate from third on a fielder's choice. Coming up with a Jacobs on third and Roth on first, freshman, Haley McFarlane singled deep down the line in right field to give the Huskies the 7-6 walk-off win.
Kylie Thomsen (1-0) received the win in her one-inning out of the Huskies' bullpen in the seventh inning. Kate Kopek gave SCSU a dominant performance by only allowing three earned runs in her six innings of work.
Nebraska-Kearney's Sarah Handrahan allowed two earned runs and seven hits over her 5.1 innings while Abbey Martin received the loss after making a one inning appearance in the seventh.
St. Cloud State returns to the Husky Dome on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 1:30 against Southwest Baptist University.
