ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (10-23-2, 5-19-0 WCHA) was defeated in a heartbreaking overtime finish against the Bemidji State University Beavers (13-17-2, 10-10-2 WCHA) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday, Feb. 16 in the last game of the 2018-19 regular season for SCSU.
The first 20 minutes went by scoreless between the Beavers and Huskies. SCSU was unable to capitalize on either of their two power plays against the number one WCHA ranked penalty kill BSU boasts. The Huskies led the period in SOG, 12-7.
Bemidji was first to score at 1:43 of the second period with an unassisted goal by Jacqueline Kaasa. St. Cloud's Hannah Potrykus would tie the game with just 25 seconds remaining in the second period to head into the third with a 1-1 score.
Sixty minutes of regulation play was not enough for the teams and overtime was needed to decide Saturday's matchup. Bemidji State's Lydia Passolt would get the final victory goal at 2:19 of the OT period and BSU finished their weekend sweep of the Huskies with a 2-1 win.
St. Cloud State's goaltender Emma Polusny stopped 33 shots in the game; the Beaver's Lauren Bench had 26 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 27, BSU 35. St. Cloud went 0-3 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies will have a bye weekend in the last week of WCHA regular season play in the next seven days. SCSU will then look to playoffs and be anxious to find out where they will travel March 1-3 for the WCHA Quarterfinals.
Saturday's Senior Salute: St. Cloud State's five seniors (Julia Tylke, Ivy Dynek, Hannah Potrykus, Suvi Ollikainen, and Jordan Stewart) played in their last games at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center today. The class has combined to play over 560 games in their career and posted over 145 points in the past four years. Tylke will leave SCSU as one of the Huskies top 10 all-time leading scorers with 81 points.
