SCSU defeated MSU-Mankato 4-1 in their final meeting of the season
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (9-20-2, 4-16-0 WCHA) defeated the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks (9-13-5, 3-12-3-2 WCHA) 4-1 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Tuesday, Feb. 5.
During the first period, SCSU's Brooke Kudirka had a good look at a breakaway goal, and MSU produced a two-on-one chance against defender Abby Thiessen. The first 20 minutes passed scoreless between the two teams though and we would go into the second even at zero's.
St. Cloud came alive in the second period. The Huskies' Kayla Friesen struck first just a minute and 30 second into the period, her third goal of the season. Friesen was assisted by Hannah Potrykus and Taylor Wemple.
The Huskies' second goal came from the same St. Cloud line; Potrykus from Friesen and Hallie Theodosopoulos 10:13 into the period.
The third and final goal of the period came from Theodosopoulos on the power play. Huskies took a three-goal lead at the end of the second period.
At 16:49 of the third period, Potrykus scored her second goal of the night and third point of the game. Mankato would break the Huskies shutout attempt however with a late period goal from Taylor Gullenchyn. Tuesday night's game ended with a 4-1 St. Cloud win.
St. Cloud State's goaltender Emma Polusny stopped 42 shots in the game; the Mavericks' Abigail Levy had 25 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 29, MSU 43. St. Cloud went 1-1 on the power play and did not receive a penalty in the game.
"You don't know what to expect from a Tuesday night game, it's out of the ordinary," said Huskies' Head Coach Eric Rud. "We competed hard early; Polusny played great tonight and kept us in there for a large part of the game, but we were able to keep creating offense."
The Huskies are on the road this weekend (Feb. 8-9) in Duluth, MN to take on the Bulldogs in 7:07 p.m. and 4:07 p.m. games.
The women's hockey team returns home to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Feb. 15-16 at 6:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. to face the Bemidji State Beavers in the Huskies last regular season games of the year.
