Scouting the Huskies
SCSU split their season-opening series against Minnesota State last weekend, shutting out the Mavericks 1-0 on Friday and falling 4-2 Saturday. Junior Allie Cornelius and freshman Mackenzie Bourgerie each scored their first collegiate goals on the weekend. Freshman goaltender Sanni Ahola earned WCHA Rookie of the Week honors on December 1 for her efforts against MSU. Ahola recorded a 37-save shutout on Friday evening, setting a new program record for most saves in a debut and becoming the first Huskies tender since 2004 record a shutout in her inaugural appearance. She finished the series with 75 saves, a 2.02 GAA mark and a .949 save percentage. Klara Hymlarova scored her first goal of the season on Saturday against Minnesota State. She earned WCHA All-Rookie Team honors last season after leading the team with 26 points on eight goals and 18 assists. The Huskies defense blocked 38 shots over the weekend, including a whopping 22 blocks on Friday. Hymlarova and sophomore defender Addi Scribner currently are tied for the team lead with seven blocks each. St. Cloud State's penalty kill was on point during the weekend, eliminating nine of ten Mavericks chances on the power play.
Scouting the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs were swept last weekend at the hands of No. 3 Minnesota last weekend by 4-2 and 2-1 finals. UMD's penalty kill was extremely efficient during the series, holding the Gophers scoreless on six chances with a total of just 12 shots on goal during the advantage. Senior forward Ashton Bell leads the Bulldogs with five points on two goals and three assists, while Emma Soderberg has started every game in net with a 2-2-0 record, a 2.45 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.
"They're a good skating team," said Huskies head coach Steve Macdonald, "They have some high-end skill as well, they have fast forwards. That'll be a challenge for us, defending off the rush and obviously the offensive zone. Identifying our structure, identifying our checks in the defensive zone is going to be critical. For us, it's going to be a matter of getting the puck behind their defensemen. Making their defensemen turn their feet, getting that pressure."
