Huskies finish seventh at NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championship

MANKATO, MINN. – It was a pretty record breaking weekend for the St. Cloud State University track and field team, it was the perfect weekend for it to be so. The Huskies put together an outstanding team performance at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota. Thanks to several personal and school record performances, St. Cloud State finished seventh as a team at the conference meet, tallying 34.5 points over the course of the weekend.
The Huskies got off to a hot start on Friday, as they entered the final day of competition with 19.5 points to their name. On Saturday, St. Cloud State saw even more podium performances, as Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East), Chrissy Lofgren (Stewartville, Minn. / Stewartville), Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East), Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake), the 4x400m relay team and Victoria Czech (Chippewa Falls, Wis. / Chippewa Falls) landed in the top-8 Saturday afternoon.
Baynes closed her impressive indoor season with a fifth place finish in the 60m dash, running a 7.68 to earn four points for her team. Baynes will now wait and see if she qualifies for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, as she ran a provisional time of 7.61 earlier this season.
Lofgren ran a near perfect mile Saturday afternoon, as she earned points towards St. Cloud State's overall team score with a seventh place finish in the race. Lofgren earned two points towards the team score thanks to her 5:06.15 ran, landing her in seventh place in the final conference indoor meet of her collegiate career. Lofgren additionally earned points for the Huskies in the 3000m run, clocking a time of 10:21.44 to finish in eighth.
Czech recorded a PR in her first ever NSIC Indoor Pentathlon, finishing in sixth place with 3133 points. The sophomore entered the final event of the pentathlon, the 800m run, in seventh place, but thanks to a seventh place finish in the event, Czech vaulted herself into sixth place.
In the other field events, Taylor and Jungwirth finished seventh and eighth in the triple jump, concluding their indoor careers on the podium as well. Taylor finished in seventh with a jump of 11.59 meters while Jungwirth was right behind in eighth thanks to her 11.50 meter jump.
The 4x400 team closed the day with a seventh place finish, earning two criticial points for the overall team score. The team of Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River), Makayla Rice (Racine, Wis. / Horlick), Kaylee Gessay (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South) and Leighten Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandavia) clocked a time of 4:02.32 to finish in seventh place.
Thanks to these and several other strong performances, St. Cloud State finished in seventh as a team with 34.5 total points. The Huskies will return to action for the outdoor season in late March.
