Lofgren’s wins highlights trip to Ted Nelson Classic

MANKATO, MINN. – St. Cloud State University women's indoor track and field team has not missed a beat this 2019-20 season. Neither has long distance runner Chrissy Lofgren (Stewartville, Minn. / Stewartville). Fresh off a career season in cross country, Lofgren is off to a hot start this indoor season, as her individual wins in the 1000 meter run and mile provided the highlights for the Huskies trip to the Ted Nelson Classic, hosted by Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota.
Lofgren was outstanding in the two long distance races, carding first place finishes in both behind season best times. In the 1000 meter run, Lofgren finished a full second ahead of the runner up in the race, clocking a time of 3:04.36. She was even better in the mile, as she finished a full five minutes ahead of the runner up thanks to her time of 5:07.97.
St. Cloud State carded one other individual win at the Ted Nelson Classic on Saturday, as the Distance Medley Relay team earned a first place finish over other Division II and Division III institutions. The team of Clara Welhouse (Green Bay, Wis. / Southwest), Katelin Prinsen (Preston, Minn. / Filmore-Central), Autum Shurbert-Hetzel (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) and Kassye Todd (Elmwood, Wis. / Elmwood-Plum City) won the event behind a time of 13:05.97.
In addition to Lofgren, several other Huskies recorded top-8 finishes on Saturday, including sprinters Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East) and Emelia Burris (Wood Dale, Ill. / Fenton). Both recorded top-8 finishes in the 200 meter dash, with Baynes finishing fifth with a time of 25.34 and Burris seventh with a time of 25.72. Burris additionally excelled in the field events, finishing third in long jump at 5.62 meters. That mark currently ranks third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NISC) and is a personal record (PR) for Burris this season.
St. Cloud State additionally saw student-athletes place in the 600m, 800m and 1000m runs, as well as the Distance Medley Relay, high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump. In the 600m, Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) continued her strong start to the season with a fourth place finish thanks to a time of 1:37.78. Right behind her was Leighton Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandinavia) who finished in sixth with a time of 1:40.90. The two Huskies finished 1-2 in their respective heat.
In the 800m run, Welhouse scored an eighth place finish for St. Cloud State thanks to her time of 2:26.93. Shurbert-Hetzel joined Lofgren on the podium in the 1000m run thanks to her fifth place finish and time of 3:08.74.
St. Cloud State had just as much success in the field events as it did on the track, as multiple student-athletes recorded top-8 finishes. In the long jump, Parker Buske (Madison, Wis. / West) joined Burris as a top-8 finisher, coming in seventh with a jump of 5.33 meters. The triple jump was where the Huskies found a significant amount of success, as Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) and Maya Taylor (Oswego, Minn. / Oswego East) provided a 2-3 punch in the event. Jungwirth was the top finisher in the event, coming in second place behind a jump of 11.33 meters, while Taylor was third thanks to her 11.06 meter jump.
In high jump, Claire Shea (Excelsior, Minn. / Chanhassen) moved into the top-24 in the conference standings with her fifth place finish. The sophomore cleared 1.52 meter in the event, which moved her into the top-25 on the NSIC performance list. In pole vault, first year Gracie Elsenpeter (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) finished in the top-8 yet again, coming in seventh after clearing 3.20 meters.
The Huskies will continue their busy season next weekend, as the team split shifts at two separate meets, including the SDSU Classic in Brookings, South Dakota and the CSB/SJU Invitational in Collegeville, Minnesota.
