St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Gears Up for Home Tilt with Bemidji State

Huskies look to start another winning streak in final game before the holiday break
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (6-3 overall, 3-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) returns to Halenbeck Hall on Saturday, December 16th to take on the Bemidji State Beavers (2-6, 0-5 NSIC). Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. CT. It is the Huskies final home game of 2023 and their last game until the new year.

GAMEDAY PROMOTIONS
Teddy Bear Toss – There will be a teddy bear toss with all donations benefiting Toys for Tots.
Youth Day – Every child 13 and under will get in free with a paid adult ticket.
Husky Hot Shots Performances – At halftime of our game, children who participated in our youth camp, Husky Hot Shots, will be performing. They will be accompanied by SCSU Men's Basketball players.
LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State traveled to UMary on Tuesday to take on the Marauders. The first quarter went back and forth but UMary led 17-14, at the end of the period. Early in the second quarter, the Huskies fell behind by eight points in part to an 8-3 run by UMary. Senior forward Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.) scored four of the final six points for the Huskies who went into halftime trailing 28-23. Offense was hard to come by for St. Cloud State in the first half as they shot 32% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc.
The Huskies went on an 8-2 run with 5:38 left in the 3rd quarter to cut what was once a nine-point deficit to three points. The Marauders ended the third quarter on an 8-4 run and led 42-35 heading into the final frame. The Huskies again struggled offensively as they shot 23% from the field, but the tides would begin to turn at the start of the fourth quarter. UMary held a 48-41 lead with 4:40 left in the game, but their lead would be very short lived. Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) started the comeback by making a layup off a Henning assist. Henning split a pair of free throws and cut the deficit to four points with 3:43 remaining. Senior guard Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn.) was freed up by an off-ball screen by Sawicki and capitalized on a wide-open layup to bring the Huskies within two points. St. Cloud State then forced a turnover on the defensive end and Sawicki tied the game, knocking down a baseline jump shot off a series of pump fakes. The Huskies forced another miss on defense and sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) blew by her defender on the baseline and made a floater to give St. Cloud State a 50-48 lead with 1:44 remaining in the game. The Huskies iced the game at the free throw line, knocking down all eight of their attempts in the final 84 seconds of the game to earn a 60-53 victory. St. Cloud outscored the Marauders 25-11 in the fourth quarter and ended the game on a 19-5 run.
Sawicki scored a team high 17 points and nearly recorded a double-double with eight rebounds. She also shut down the paint with two blocks and a steal. Sawicki's 1.8 blocks per game puts her in fifth place in the NSIC in that category and her 7.2 rebounds per game is good for sixth in the conference. Henning scored a season-high 15 points and made a career-high nine free throws on a career-high 10 attempts. Nine of Henning's points came in the 4th quarter with seven of those points coming by way of the free throw line. Eggebrecht posted nine points and grabbed three rebounds. Eggebrecht has scored nine or more points in every game this season and leads the Huskies in scoring at 12.9 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's matchup against Bemidji State will serve as the 68th meeting between the programs. The Huskies hold a 50-18 all-time advantage. The teams split the two meetings last year and St. Cloud State took the first game. SCSU held a comfortable lead throughout the game, but Bemidji cut the lead to three points with 2:23 left in the third quarter. A 7-0 run by the Huskies pushed their lead back up to 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. St. Cloud State went on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to push its lead to 20. The stifling Huskies defense held the Beavers scoreless from 2:23 left in the 3rd quarter to the 5:07 mark of the fourth quarter. St. Cloud State continued to grow its lead and came away with a 68-42 victory. The Huskies defense did an impeccable job, forcing the Beavers to shoot just 23.4% from the field. BSU also turned the ball over 21 times. Jada Eggebrecht scored 18 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting.
The second game was tightly contested throughout as the Huskies held a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter as Eggebrecht knocked down a jumper with four seconds remaining in the third period. St. Cloud State held a lead as big five points in the fourth quarter, but the Beavers used a 7-2 run to tie the game at 62 with 3:14 left in the game. Bemidji State converted on an and-one layup to give them a three-point lead. Eggebrecht then knocked down a jumper with 1:15 left in the game to bring the Huskies within one point. St. Cloud State would force a miss on the ensuing defensive possession and call a timeout with 37 ticks left. Dru Henning was fouled and converted on one of the two free throws to tie the game. The Huskies forced another miss on the defensive end and had an opportunity to win the game. SCSU called a timeout to draw up a play and Eggebrecht missed the potential buzzer beating jumper to send the game into overtime.
In the five-minute overtime period, an Eggebrecht jumper would give the Huskies a two-point advantage with 3:24 left in the game. Bemidji State would take back the lead by making a three pointer and then knocked down two free throws to give them a three-point lead. Bemidji would push that lead to four points off more free throws, but Eggebrecht would bring the Huskies within one-point after drilling a three pointer with 22 seconds left. St. Cloud State would get the ball back down three points with 11 seconds remaining with a chance to tie the game, but Eggebrecht would be blocked on a three-point attempt to all but end the game. St. Cloud went on to lose 81-77. Eggebrecht scored a career-high 31 points while making five three-pointers, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out three assists. Tori Peschel stuffed the stat sheet as she recorded six points, 12 rebounds, and five assists.
SCOUTING BEMIDJI STATE
Bemidji State heads into this matchup with a of 2-6 overall record and a 0-5 record in conference play. The Beavers have lost five straight games by an average margin of 14.2 points. The Beavers are winless on the road so far this season. Sophomore forward Allysa Hill leads the Beavers with a scoring average of 15.5 points per game which is good for 7th in the NSIC. Hill also grabs a team-high five rebounds per game and shoots 53.8% from the field and 55.6% from three-point range. In the Beavers last outing against UMary, Hill scored an efficient 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals. Senior guard Sam Pogatchnik is the Beavers second leading scorer at 7.5 points per game. Pogatchnik also averages 4.3 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game.
The first matchup last season saw the Beavers struggle offensively as Hill only scored two points, albeit in 11 minutes of action. The Huskies attacked Hill on the offensive end as she committed four fouls in the game. Pogatchnik scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in the 26-point Beaver loss. The second matchup saw Hill struggle again as she only scored four points in 29 minutes. Pogatchnik nearly recorded a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds as the Beavers escaped with a four-point victory.
Chelsea Stoltenberg enters her ninth season as the head coach of the Beavers. Bemidji State has struggled in Stoltenberg's tenure as they have exceeded double digit victories in just two seasons. Stoltenberg has a record of 65-140 in her eight seasons as head coach.
SHINING STAR
Sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) was named to the NSIC Women's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Nov. 27 for her contributions over the weekend. Eggebrecht averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 35 minutes per game while scoring a season-high 16-points against Northern Michigan. She has scored 10+ points in seven consecutive games, dating back to last season. The honor is the first of Eggebrecht's career.
