Huskies and Winona State set for rubber game on Monday
Game One: St. Cloud State 12, Winona State 5
The Huskies found themselves in a hole early as Winona State plated three in the first inning of game one, setting the tone early for a bat-friendly day. After trading zeroes in the second, Sam Riola (3-for-5, 3 R, 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI) blasted a two-run shot out to right-center with one away in the third inning. Luke Tupy fired another scoreless frame in the home half, then Tyler Schiller (2-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R) drew a one-out walk and scored all the way from first on a Drew Bulson (3-for-3, R, 2B, 2 RBI) double to tie the game at three in the fourth.
SCSU blew the game open in the fifth with a six run frame courtesy of six hits including stretch of seven straight Huskies reaching with two outs. A Garrett Bevacqua (1-for-5, R, HR, 2 RBI) groundout plated Riola for the go-ahead run, then a Ben Clapp (1-for-3, 2B, RBI) RBI double with two away sparked the rest of the crooked number.
Bevacqua led off the sixth inning with a solo shot out to right-center, stretching the lead to 10-4, then Kevin Butler (0-for-0, RBI, SF) added one with a sacrifice fly to plate Sawyer Smith (1-for-3, BB, 2 R, 2B). Riola capped off the scoring with a towering solo blast that ricocheted off a passing train along the railroad running parallel to the left field wall.
Tupy earned the win with 4.0 innings of three-run ball, striking out three while scattering seven hits and three walks. Grady Fuchs fired 2.0 scoreless frames out of the bullpen, striking out three and retiring six of eight faced. Kole Krier finished things off in the seventh, allowing one run on two hits.
Game Two: Winona State 8, St. Cloud State 7
Fresh off a crooked number-fueled win in game one, St. Cloud State dropped to 1-5 in one-run games with an 8-7 loss in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader thanks to a five-run Warrior fifth.
Jack Habeck threw well in his first weekend start of 2023, striking out seven and walking a lone batter across 5.0 innings of three-run ball. The junior exited with a no-decision in a 3-3 ball game, scattering eight hits over his outing.
After Winona State struck first with a run in the second, John Nett (3-for-5, BB, 3 R, 2B, RBI, 3 SB) drew a leadoff walk then moved up on a passed ball before swiping third with one away. Garrett Bevacqua (2-for-5, 3 RBI) ripped a run-scoring single into right, knotting the game at one. WSU added a run in the home half, taking a short-lived 2-1 lead that was quickly erased via back-to-back RBI doubles from Nett and Sam Riola (2-for-5, R, 2 2B, RBI).
The Warriors tied things up in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI double, locking the game into a 3-3 standoff over the next two frames. Tyler Schiller doubled with one away in the seventh and scored on a Ben Clapp (1-for-4, RBI) go-ahead RBI single. Brayden Jacobson pinch-ran for Clapp and flew around the basepaths to score from first on Sawyer Smith's (3-for-4, BB, R, 2B, RBI) third hit of the game – an RBI double smoked down the left field line.
Winona State responded with five in the home half of the seventh including a go-ahead three-run home run. The Huskies would get a pair back a half-inning later on a two-run Bevacqua single then proceeded to put runners at first and second with zero outs but would leave both aboard.
A 1-2-3 ninth sealed the Huskies fate, evening the series at a game apiece with a rubber match set for Monday afternoon.
