St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Gears Up for Weekend Road Trip

Huskies on the road for first time in 20 days, travel to play Minnesota State and Winona State
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (10-6 overall, 7-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) returns to the road after playing four consecutive home games in the last 20 days. The Huskies play No. 25 Minnesota State (14-4, 11-1 NSIC) on Friday and Winona State (5-12, 4-8 NSIC) on Saturday. Tipoff for Friday's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT at the Taylor Center in Mankato and Saturday's game is set for 3:30 p.m. CT at McCown Gymnasium in Winona.

FAMILIAR TERRITORY
Following five years as Dr. Lori Ulfert's top assistant at St. Cloud State from 1999-00 to 2003-04, current head coach Lori Fish was hired as the head coach at Minnesota State in 2004. Fish transformed the Mavericks from a middling program into an NCAA contender that went on to win a National Championship, improving their win total in each of her four seasons. She went 62-53 (.539) over four years in Mankato and oversaw a turnaround that took the program from a 11-16 record in her debut 2004-05 season to a historic 23-9 campaign in 2007-08. In her final season with the Mavericks in 2007-08, Fish's offense averaged nearly 81 points per game and ranked No. 3 in the NCAA in scoring as MSU reached the NCAA Sweet 16. Minnesota State boasted a 94.1 defensive rating under Fish with her hallmark defense recording 10.7 steals and forcing 19.8 turnovers a game.
Current assistant coach/recruiting coordinator, Jessica Hartmann began her collegiate coaching career in 2004-05 as the graduate assistant coach under Fish at Minnesota State, going on to spend four seasons with Fish and the Mavericks. She helped orchestrate an impressive turnaround in Mankato as MSU went from 11-16 in her first season on staff to a 23-9 record in 2007-08. The Mavericks improved their win total in each of her four years on the bench, culminating in a Sweet 16 appearance at the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Minnesota State's offense averaged nearly 81 points per game in 2007-08, landing third across the country in scoring. Four Mavericks earned All-NCC honors under Hartmann.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday's matchup against Minnesota State will mark the 113th meeting between the two programs. St. Cloud State holds a 67-45 all-time advantage. The Mavericks earned a victory in last year's meeting, beating the Huskies 86-61.
Through the first six minutes of the game last season, MSU held a 12-1 lead, stifling the Huskies offense. St. Cloud State started to find its offensive footing late in the quarter, but still trailed 19-11 at the end of the first. The Mavericks continued their offensive prowess opening the second quarter with a 9-2 run to take a 28-13 lead. MSU led by 12+ points the rest of the quarter and took a 43-28 advantage into halftime. St. Cloud State didn't go away, using a 12-2 run in the middle of the third quarter to bring itself within seven points. The Mavericks were not rattled by the Huskies run, quickly building their lead back up to double digits, ending the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 66-46 going into the fourth quarter. Minnesota State led by 17+ points for the remainder of the game, coming away with an 86-61 victory over St. Cloud State.
Dru Henning scored 14 points on an efficient five of seven shooting while also recording four rebounds and a block. Ashley Sawicki scored 10 points and snatched four rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.
Saturday's meeting against Winona State will be the 48th matchup between the two programs. The Huskies hold a 28-19 all-time advantage. St. Cloud State has won the past three games against the Warriors including a 58-43 victory last year.

The win for the Huskies marked the 300th career win for head coach Lori Fish.

Senior guard Joey Batt is the fifth leading scorer in the NSIC with an average of 16.5 points per game on 45% from the field and 39% from beyond the arc. Batt also leads the conference in steals per game with 3.8 and chips in 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. The New Ulm, Minn. native has scored 18+ points in two of her past three games including a 21-point outing against UMary.
Junior guard Destinee Bursch is the team's second leading scorer with 14.7 points per game on 43% from the field. Bursch is fourth on the team in rebounds per game with 4.2 and leads the team with 3.2 assists per game. Bursch has scored 16 or more points in six of her past eight games including a season-high of 25 points against Minnesota Crookston.
Sophomore guard Natalie Bremer is the last player on the Mavericks to average double digits points with 13.5 per game. Bremer also averages 3.4 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.1 assists per game. Bremer has scored 16+ points in three of her past five games including a season-high 21 points against Minot State.
The trio guards had their way against the Huskies last season as Batt scored 18 points, registered eight steals, grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and made two three-pointers. Bursch scored 14 points and tallied four steals and assists. Bremer scored 18 points, dished out four assists and recorded three steals off the bench.
Emilee Thiesse is in her 12th season as the head coach of the Mavericks and has a record of 210-115. Thiesse has guided MSU to nine winning seasons, six 18+ win seasons and four NCAA tournament appearances.
SCOUTING WINONA STATE
Winona State enters this matchup with the Huskies posting a 5-12 record and a 4-8 record in conference play to put them 11th in the NSIC. The Warriors have lost four of their past five games by an average of 19.5 points.
Junior guard Olivia Gamoke is the team's leading scorer with 9.2 points per game on 37% shooting from the field. The guard also averages 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 30 minutes of play. Last game against Minot State, Gamoke had her second highest scoring output of the season as she scored 17 points and made four of her five three-point attempts.
Senior forward Alex Dornfield is third on the team in points per game with an average of 8.0 on 36% from the field. Dornfield is the team's leading rebounder with 6.9 per game and averages 1.1 assists per game. The past six games for the Warriors have seen Dornfield score 8+ points including two double-double performances against Bemidji State and Minot State. The senior has also recorded a steal in five consecutive games.
Ana Wurtz is in her second season as the head coach of the Warriors after posting an 11-17 record in her inaugural season. Wurtz has served on the staff for the past 10 seasons as both an assistant coach and an associate coach.

LAST TIME OUT

On Friday, against Wayne State, the Huskies jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after senior forward Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.) drained a three-pointer off an assist from senior guard Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn.). The Huskies continued to apply pressure to the Wildcats defense as freshman guard Alana Zarneke (Appleton, Wis.) rained down back-to-back three-pointers, giving the Huskies a 15-2 lead. St. Cloud State went on to lead 21-4 after the first quarter as its defense held the Wildcats to a lowly 2-of-14 shooting. The second quarter completely flipped on the Huskies, as they only scored four points in the quarter, going scoreless in the final 6:22 of the half. Wayne State found its offensive footing, scoring 17 points on 46% shooting from the field. Despite the poor second quarter, SCSU still held a 25-21 lead at the break.
Coming out of halftime, the sophomore duo of guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) and forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) jumpstarted the Huskies offense combining for 11 of the 13 points scored in the quarter. Wayne State ended the period on a 7-0 over the final 3:03 to tie the game at 38 heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter bounced back and forth and WSC held a 47-44 lead with 5:32 left in the game before Zarneke rang home a three-pointer to tie the game. Wayne State's Maya Fitzpatrick answered right back by driving into the lane and finishing a layup while getting fouled for a three-point play. SCSU responded with freshman forward Paige Lambe (Verona, Wis.) finishing a layup to cut the deficit to one. Senior guard Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis.) drained a clutch three-pointer on the next offensive possession for SCSU to give the Huskies a 52-50 lead with 3:19 left in the game. St. Cloud State iced the game at the free throw line, converting six of its eight attempts in the final 1:28 as the Huskies captured a 58-52 victory.
Sawicki stuffed the stat sheet for the Huskies, recording her third double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sawicki tied her career-highs with four assists and two steals while blocking two shots. The sophomore shot 71% from the field while extending her streak of 10+ points to seven consecutive games.
Eggebrecht was the only other Husky to score in double figures as she tallied 11 points along with two assists and two three-pointers, as well as a steal. The sophomore guard has scored double-digits points in five of her past six games and has made a three-pointer in five consecutive games.
Zarneke cashed three of her five three-point attempts leading to nine points, which was her second highest scoring output of the season. The freshman has now hit a three-pointer in three consecutive games and has grabbed two or more rebounds in three of her past four games.
Against Augustana on Saturday, the Huskies trailed 13-7 halfway through the first quarter. St. Cloud State battled back to cut the deficit to a single point after Henning knocked down a three-pointer with 2:17 left in the quarter. The Vikings led 19-16 after shooting 80% from the field in the period. The Huskies were able to stay within striking distance in part to forcing five turnovers in the frame. Eggebrecht scored the first five points of the second quarter as she rang home a three-pointer to give SCSU a 21-19 lead. St. Cloud State closed the half on a 6-2 run to take a 29-25 lead going into halftime. The Huskies outscored Augie 13-6 in the quarter and held the Vikings to two of seven shooting and forced nine turnovers.

The Huskies led by double-digits the rest of the quarter and really started to flex their muscles as senior Makenna Vanzant (Farmington, Ark.) capped off a 9-2 Huskies run by splashing a three-pointer giving them a 56-37 lead. St. Cloud State doubled up the Vikings in the quarter, outscoring them 28-14. The Huskies led by 13+ points for the entire fourth quarter, going on to win 76-58, capturing their third consecutive victory.

The sophomore has now shot upwards of 50% from the field in six of her past seven games, recorded at least one steal in four consecutive games and dished out three assists in three consecutive games.
Draheim was the final Husky that scored in double digits, tallying 11 points, recording three steals and set up her teammates with two assists. Draheim has registered 2+ assists in 11 of her past 12 games and in 13 games this season.

Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) was named to the NSIC Women's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office for the second time this season on Jan 22. for her contributions throughout that week in SCSU's two home wins. Sawicki averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 68.8% (11-of-16) shooting in wins over Wayne State and Augustana. She scored a game-high 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against Wayne State, posting her third double-double of the season. She also added four assists, two blocked shots and two steals in that. In the 76-58 win over Augustana, she recorded 15 points, four rebounds and three assists. She also received the honor on Dec. 18, 2023.

Draheim was the final Husky that scored in double digits, tallying 11 points, recording three steals and set up her teammates with two assists. Draheim has registered 2+ assists in 11 of her past 12 games and in 13 games this season.

SHINING STARS
Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) was named to the NSIC Women's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office for the second time this season on Jan 22. for her contributions throughout that week in SCSU's two home wins. Sawicki averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 68.8% (11-of-16) shooting in wins over Wayne State and Augustana. She scored a game-high 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against Wayne State, posting her third double-double of the season. She also added four assists, two blocked shots and two steals in that. In the 76-58 win over Augustana, she recorded 15 points, four rebounds and three assists. She also received the honor on Dec. 18, 2023.
Sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) was named to the NSIC Women's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Nov. 27 for her contributions that weekend. Eggebrecht averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 35 minutes per game while scoring a season-high 16-points against Northern Michigan. The honor was the first of Eggebrecht's career.
