St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Gears Up for Midweek Home Matchup with CSP

Huskies look to snap two-game skid
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (7-5 overall, 4-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) begins a four game homestand on Wednesday evening when it welcomes Concordia-St. Paul (10-4, 6-3 NSIC) to St Cloud. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall.

LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State opened 2024 on the road last weekend traveling to the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Jan. 5 and then to Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Jan. 6. Against Sioux Falls, St. Cloud State got off to a fast start, opening the game on a 7-2 run. The Cougars struck back with a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to take an 11-7 lead. USF held that lead the rest of the quarter and ended the period with a 15-12 advantage. The Huskies battled back to start the second quarter as sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) drained her second three-pointer of the game to knot the game at 19. Sioux Falls then started to take control, answering with a three-pointer of its own and went on a 10-0 run to take a 29-19 lead. St. Cloud State finished the quarter strong, ending the half on a 10-2 run. Senior guard Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis.) knocked down a three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining as SCSU trailed 34-32 at halftime.
At the break, St. Cloud was shooting 34% from the field, but a blistering 46% from beyond the arc. 24 of Sioux Falls' 34 points came in the paint as they shot 57% from the field in the half. St. Cloud's three-point defense stifled the Cougars as they only made two of their seven three-point attempts.
Sioux Falls began to take command of the game in the third quarter finding its groove beyond the arc. USF converted on three of their six three-point attempts in the period and outscored the Huskies 21-13, taking a 55-45 lead into the fourth quarter. SCSU outscored Sioux Falls 18-15 in the fourth quarter, but could not cut the deficit any smaller than seven points. Sioux Falls came away with a 70-63 win as its offense could not be stopped, shooting 59% from the field for the game.
Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) led the Huskies in scoring with 13 points on an efficient 55% shooting. Sawicki also grabbed four rebounds and recorded one assist. The past three games, Sawicki has scored double-digit points and has gotten to the free throw line 4+ times in those games.
Draheim scored 12 points, snatched three rebounds, cashed two three-pointers, and set a career-high with four steals. The senior guard has been consistent as a scorer for the Huskies as she has scored seven or more points in six consecutive games and in 10 of her 12 games played. Draheim has also been consistent as a passer, leading the team with 2.7 assists per game which is the 10th best mark in the conference.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Stamer (Hutchinson, Minn.) had a career night for the Huskies as she scored a career-high 11 points and set career marks with four field goals made and three three-pointers made. Stamer also recorded a rebound and an assist in 19 minutes of play.
In a rematch of last year's quarterfinal game of the NSIC Tournament, St. Cloud State jumped out to a fast start leading 8-4 after a three-pointer by Eggebrecht. The Mustangs started to find their groove offensively, outscoring the Huskies 16-6 the rest of the quarter to lead 20-14. SMSU opened the flood gates in the second quarter, using a 21-3 run to build up a 22-point lead. SMSU led 44-26 at halftime after knocking down five three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. The Huskies defense had no answer for the Mustangs offense as they shot 54% from the field in the half.
The second half produced similar results as the Mustangs outscored the Huskies 35-29 on their way to a commanding 79-55 victory. Southwest shot 54% from the field in the second half and forced the Huskies into 15 turnovers in the game.
Sawicki lead the Huskies in scoring again, putting together a 10 point and eight rebound outing. The Waunakee, Wis. native also recorded one block, one assist, and made four of her six free throws.
Senior Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn.) produced a season-high nine points along with three rebounds, three assists and three steals in 21 minutes.
Freshman Alana Zarneke (Appleton, Wis.) had her second highest scoring output of the season as she recorded eight points in 14 minutes of play. Zarneke also grabbed two rebounds and knocked down both of her free throw attempts.

In that meeting, the Huskies held a 17-8 advantage after the first quarter after Jada Eggebrecht scored seven points in the period. Heading into this midweek matchup, the Golden Bears are sitting in 5th place of the NSIC with a record of 10-4 and a 6-3 record in conference play. CSP has won three of their past five games with victories over Minot State, Minnesota Duluth, and Sioux Falls.
Senior guard Ally Gietzel leads the CSP offense, scoring 17.3 points per game, the fifth highest mark in the NSIC, on 42% from the field and 34% from three-point range. Gietzel is also the team's top rebounder with 7.1 rebounds per game, the eight highest mark in the NSIC, and leads the team with 2.6 assists per game. The guard has scored double-digit points in all but one game this season and has grabbed 7+ rebounds in eight consecutive games. Gietzel produced her second highest scoring mark of the season last game with a 27-point outing against UMary. The NSIC named Gietzel to the Shining 5 this week after she averaged 18.5 points and played 72 out of a possible 80 minutes in last week's games.
Junior center Lindsey Becher is the team's second leading scorer with 12 points per game on 46% shooting. Becher is second on the team in rebounding with 5.5 rebounds per game and is second in the NSIC with 2.1 blocks per game. Prior to the game against UMary, Becher had a streak of three consecutive games where she scored 16 or more points and grabbed seven or more rebounds.
Redshirt freshman Lauren Wilson is the last Golden Bear that exceeds the double-digit scoring threshold with 11.4 points per game on 53% from the field. Wilson also averages 4.3 rebounds per game, 1.4 assists per game, and 1.1 steals per game. Against UMary, Wilson scored 12 points on an efficient six of nine shooting.

Head coach Amanda Johnson enters her ninth season with the Golden Bears after being named the head coach in April of 2016. Two years ago, Johnson became the third coach in Concordia's history to amass the 100-win threshold. Sitting with an all-time record of 121-87, Johnson is third all-time in career wins at CSP. Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) was named to the NSIC Women's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Dec. 18 for her contributions throughout that week. Sawicki averaged 14.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in a pair of wins. Against UMary, she nearly recorded a double-double, scoring a career-high 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds with two blocks in a win. Against Bemidji State, Sawicki tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season in a home win. The honor is the first of Sawicki's career.
