Huskies record 10 top-five finishes, three set new personal bests

WAVERLY, Iowa. – St. Cloud State Track & Field opened its 2024 outdoor season by finishing in fifth place at the Good Friday Challenge in Waverly, Iowa at Wartburg College on Friday. The Huskies recorded 10 top-five finishes while three individuals set new personal bests.

Junior distance runners Greta Freed (Rochester, Minn.) and Cambrie Kowal (Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.) each ran to personal bests in the 10,000m run. Freed finished third in a time of 39:24.50, cutting 15 seconds off her previous best while Kowal was right behind, finishing fourth in a time of 39:48.01, cutting an impressive 56 seconds off her 25 lap best.

Junior jumper/middle distance runner Makaylin Christenson (Prairie Farms, Wis.) tied for fifth in the high jump while freshman sprinter/jumper Viola Okey-Ezealah (Lagos, Nigeria) posted a new personal best by .06m (2.25 inches) in the event.

In the other field events, senior jumper Elena Martinez-Rodriguez (Madrid, Spain) placed fourth with a leap of 10.76m (35-3.75). Freshman jumper/thrower Savannah Reinke finished fourth in the javelin throw with a best toss of 31.33m (102-09).

Two Huskies relays placed in the top-five. The quartet of Okey-Ezealah, Katie Lavato, Elena Martinez-Rodriguez, Addi Scribner placed third in the 4x100m relay in 50.22 and the quartet of Mariana Guerra-Reese, Audrey Rabitz, Jaileen Medina, Jenna Marxhausen placed fifth in the 4x400m relay in 4:25.06. Guerra-Reese also finished fifth in the 400m dash in a time of 1:00.99.

Freshmen distance runners Alena Donahue (West Salem, Wis.) and Tegan Michalak (Arcadia, Wis.) placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 5,000m run. Donahue crossed the line in 20:14.51 and Michalak finished in 20:21.62.

Freshman Hannah Bruskiewicz (Rogers, Minn.), Scribner and junior sprinter Kendall Gonzalez (Waukesha, Wis.) made their SCSU Track & Field debut.

Reinke, freshman thrower Alicia Jennissen (Sauk Centre, Minn.), Rabitz, Marxhausen, freshman sprinter/jumper Myesha Thompson (Mount Horeb, Wis.), Martinez-Rodriguez, Okey-Ezealah, Donahue, Michalak and freshman distance runner Paige Beason (Ankeny, Iowa) competed in their first outdoor meet for the Huskies.

UP NEXT
The Huskies return to Waverly, Iowa and Wartburg College next Friday and Saturday for the Wartburg Select at the Walston-Hoover Stadium. The action will begin on Friday with the multi-events at 2 p.m. and the field events at 3 p.m. Much of the meet will be on Saturday with the multi-events starting the day off at 9 a.m. followed by the field events at 10 a.m. with the track events going off at noon.
