
Three St. Cloud State Baseball Players Earn Academic All-District® Honors

Gumbko, James and Tupy cited by CSC for academic and athletics performance
GREENWOOD, Ind. – Three St. Cloud State Baseball student-athletes have been named to the 2024 Academic All-District® Baseball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC). Senior outfielder Mitchell Gumbko (Ada, Mich.), graduate third baseman Cal James* (Buffalo, Minn.) and redshirt junior left handed pitcher Luke Tupy* (New Prague, Minn.) were recognized for their success in the classroom and on the diamond.
Gumbko, a marketing major, graduated with a 3.70 cumulative grade point average. The senior played in 48 games, making 44 starts. He owned a slash line of .316/.423/.390 with 43 hits (10 doubles) and 20 RBI. He tallied new career highs in on base percentage, runs (32), hits, doubles, RBI, walks (17) and stolen bases (14).
James, a sports management master's student, carries a 3.77 graduate GPA. In his final season of collegiate eligibility, he started all 51 games for the Huskies, owning a slash line of .369/.504/.682 with 66 hits (15 doubles, one triple and 13 home runs). He scored 53 runs and drove in another 49. He set new career highs in home runs, RBI (tie) and walks (32).
Tupy graduated with a degree in construction management with a 3.60 grade point average. The southpaw appeared in 11 games for the Huskies (all starts), pitching 63.1 innings including three complete games and one shutout. He owned a 7-2 record, a 2.98 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Opposing hitters batted just .202 against Tupy and he struck out 82 batters.
The 2024 Academic All-District® Baseball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. Student-athletes selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists are denoted with an asterisk and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced July 2, 2024.
