St. Cloud, Minn. - The #3/4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (6-1-1, 3-1-0 NCHC) jumped back into the win column on Saturday, Nov. 9 with a big 2-1 victory over #7 Miami University (6-3-1, 2-2-0 NCHC) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
In a tight defense battle similiar to the series opener on Nov. 8, the RedHawks and Huskies battle to a scoreless draw through the first 18 minutes of play in the game. Miami claimed a 1-0 lead at 18:03 of the first period with an even strength goal by Max Cook with assists from Sean Kuraly and Alex Wideman.
In the second period, SCSU came out with a strong offense push that resulted in the Huskies' first goal of the series. Junior forward Garrett Milan, who was making his 2013-14 debut on ice for SCSU, notched his first goal of the season at 1:34 of the second period on assists from freshman forward Ryan Papa and junior forward Joe Rehkamp. This was Papa's second assist of the year and Rehkamp's first point of 2013-14.
The Huskies brought home the game winner in the third period when sophomore forward David Morley posted his first goal of the new season with and even strength marker that was set-up on a picture perfect pass from sophomore linemate Jimmy Murray. The play was initially set-up by junior defender Jarrod Rabey, which was his first assist of the season.
SCSU was able to hang on to the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the game as junior goalie Ryan Faragher issued another sterling effort with 29 saves and a victory to his credit. In the game, SCSU outshot the RedHawks 35-30 as MU goalie Ryan McKay had 33 saves in the loss. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-5 and Miami was 0-of-3.
