SCSU Topples US NTDP U18 Team on Jan. 4

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team opened 2014 with a solid 8-0 victory over the U.S. National Team Development Program U18 squad in an exhibition game at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The Huskies charted its first goal of the contest at 7:02 of the first period with a marker by Nic Dowd, as assists were credited to Joey Benik and Jimmy Murray. SCSU extended its lead to 2-0 in the closing minute of the first period with a power play goal by Benik. Jonny Brodzinski and Kalle Kossila both added assists on the play for the Huskies.
In the second period, SCSU pushed its lead to 3-0 with Benik's second goal of the evening at :17. Dowd and Murray were credited with assists on the even-strength goal. The points continued to add up for SCSU as David Morley scored at :30 of the second period with a solo assist being credited to Kossila. In the first two periods of play, SCSU outshot its opponent 27-10.
In the third period, SCSU continued its domination over the NTDP U18 squad. Daniel Tedesco scored with assists from Ethan Prow and Brooks Bertsch at 7:24 of the third period to make it 5-0. The Huskies sixth goal of the night was added by Garrett Milan at 8:04 with assists from Joey Holka and Nick Oliver.
To ice the contest, SCSU finished the game with a pair of late goals to make the final 8-0. Brodzinski scored the Huskies seventh goal of the game at 15:43 of the third period with a solo assist from Kossila, which was his third helper of the night.
Benik earned the hat trick with his third goal of the night at 18:44 of the third. He was assisted on the power play goal by defender Ben Storm.
In the game, Benik had four points while Dowd, Brodzinski and Murray all had two points on the night. SCSU outshot the NTDP squad 37-20 in the game and the Huskies were 2-of-3 on the power play in the game and the NTDP squad did not have a power play attempt in the contest.
In the nets, Ryan Faragher was the goalie of record with seven saves in 29:56 minutes of play. Charlie Lindgren completed the game for the Huskies and charted 13 goals in 29:29 minutes of play. The pair earned the shutout with no goals allowed in the game. Edwin Minney was the goalie of record for the NTDP squad with 29 saves in the game.
The Huskies will continue their 2013-14 season with a pair of NCHC games at the University of Denver on Jan. 10-11. The game on Jan. 10 will begin at 8:37 p.m. and the game on Jan. 11 will begin at 8:07 p.m. (CT).
