St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State junior forward Lexy Petermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) shattered the individual game scoring record with 49 points in the Huskies 92-78 non-conference win over Mayville State Tuesday night at Halenbeck Hall.
St. Cloud State improves to 9-1 overall. Mayville State falls to 8-4 overall.
The Huskies shot 48.1% from the field and 55% from the three-point range. St. Cloud State outrebounded the Comets 44-30. The Huskies also forced 25 turnovers compared to their 19. SCSU recorded the largest lead of the night with 23 points and 4:19 left in the second.
Petermann broke the record in the second half at 13:22 with a three-point basket. The old record of 38 points was held by Erika Quigley set in 2006 and Ramona Rugloski in 1984. Petermann recorded 32 points for the Huskies during the first half. Petermann made 12 of 13 from the field and six of six from behind the arc in the first half. She finished the game making 20 of 22 from the field and seven of seven from behind the arc. Petermann also collected nine rebounds, three assists, and made two of three from the line. Petermann shot an impressive 90.9% from the field and 100% from the three-point range.
"It feels really humbling," said Petermann. "I was so comfortable. My teammates got me open and I just knocked down the shots. There were a number of shots available and my teammates did a great job getting the ball to me. I scored 38 points in a high school playoff game that I will never forget."
"Overall we did some nice things tonight," said head coach Lori Fish. "It was good to get the rust out and I was pleased with how we shot the ball. It was good to go against competition and it will help us going into the weekend. We came back from the break mentally and physically ready to play."
"It was special to watch Lexy tonight. She was outstanding and it seemed so effortless on her part. It was great to be a part of it and it couldn't have happened to a better player. She is such a team player and it was fun watching her go to work and have the team feeding off of her."
Two other Huskies scored in the double digits tonight. Sophomore guard Betsy MacDonald (St. Paul, Minn.) finished with 12 points for the Huskies. MacDonald made five of eight from the field and had two assists. Junior forward Nicole Wittman (Hutchinson, Minn.) collected 11 points for St. Cloud State.
Liza Hoglo led the Comets with 26 points. Hoglo collected five rebounds and four assists for Mayville. Jenna Lundon finished with 18 points for the Comets.
Mayville State University shot 51.4% from the field and 73.3% from the free-throw line.
St. Cloud State will return to action this weekend as they travel to Mankato, Minn. And St. Paul, Minn. The Huskies will take on Minnesota State on Jan. 2 and Concordia-St. Paul the following day. Â
