Huskies Softball falls 8-4 to Sioux Fals in NSIC/U.S. Bank Tournament

Sioux Falls, S.D. -- The University of Sioux Falls collected seven runs in the sixth inning to erase a 4-1 St. Cloud State lead and gain an 8-4 winin the opening game of the NSIC/U.S. Bank Softball Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Huskies, seeded #8 in the tourney are 29-26 overall and will play at 4 p.m. today (Thursday) against the winner of #3 seed Minnesota State vs. #6 Upper Iowa at Sherman Park in the double elimination tournament. Sioux Falls, the #9 seed improved to 30-21 overall.
The Huskies led off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on an rbi double by first base Jessica Goerger that scored centerfielder Abby Bunnell. Bunnell had reached on an error.
Sioux Falls evened the score in the top of th third on an rbi single by Erin Scott.
Goerger led off the Huskies three-run fourth with a single and scored on a Kelsie Fitch pinch hit double that brought in two runs. Shortstop Veronica Wold added a one run double to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.
The Cougars erupted in the sixth for seven runs on four hits. A two run single by Leah Husemoen started the Cougars scoring. Three runs were scored on a throwing error, rbi single and ground out. A two run single by Betty Thomas brought in runs six and seven for the Cougards.
St. Cloud State finished the game with four runs on six hits. Goerger and designated player Tricia DeBoer each had two hits for the Huskies.
Kelly Franks (15-6) took the loss for the Huskies. She threw five innings, gave up seven runs, struck out 12 and walked five batters.
For the Cougars, Scott and Husemoen each had two hits and two rbi. Breanna Black was the winning pitcher. She threw a complete game with no walks or strikeouts.
