St. Cloud State’s early lead slips away in first round NSIC Tournament match-up
BEMIDJI—After taking the game's first lead, the No. 6 St. Cloud State soccer team (7-8-4, 6-6-4 NSIC) was dreaming of a playoff upset, but No. 3 Bemidji State stormed back to capture the first round NSIC Tournament match-up, 3-1.
The Huskies finish their 2016 campaign with a 7-8-4 record and a 6-6-4 mark in NSIC play, which earned them their second consecutive postseason appearance.
After a stellar defensive first half from the Huskies kept BSU at bay, freshman midfielder Monica Majeski sent her team into half with a one-goal lead, 1-0, with a goal off of a corner kick in the 44th minute.
Freshman midfielder Brook Bares served the ball into the box from the corner and Majeski pounced on it in the ensuing scrum for her second goal of the season.
The lead did not last long, however. The Beavers roared out of the second half gates with three goals in a six-minute span between the 59th and 65th minutes behind tallies from sophomore forward Dani Nelson, senior forward Sarah Stram and sophomore forward Rachael Norton.
Bemidji State held a 17-12 shots advantage, but St. Cloud State had a 10-8 edge in shots on target.
In her final appearance between the pipes for the Huskies, redshirt senior Julia Clifford made five saves in the loss.
The game was also the last in the careers of defender Kendra Drew, forward Abby McDonald, midfielder Alyson Fisher and midfielder Cassidy Weiss.
