Track & Field Competes in NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships This Weekend in Mankato

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud indoor track & field program competes in the 2017 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) indoor track and field championships this weekend, Feb. 24-25, in Myers Fieldhouse on the campus of Minnesota State

The field events begin at noon on Friday, Feb. 24, with the track events scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
On Saturday, Feb. 25, the field events start at 11 a.m. followed by the track events at 1 p.m. The awards presentation is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. All-Conference performers consist of the top-three place winners in each event and the members of the top two relay teams from the conference meet.
The SCSU women's indoor team placed seventh at the 2016 NSIC Indoor Championships with 37 points. The program also finished seventh at the 2015 NSIC Indoor Championships with 37 points.
Last season, the team had two individuals earn three All-NSIC nods.
Senior Patience Yalartai earned All-NSIC honors twice at the 2016 indoor championships with second place finishes in the long jump (5.73m) and the triple jump (12.02m). She also earned a pair of all-conference nods and finished third in the long and triple jump in 2015 in her sophomore season. As a freshman in 2014, Yalartai was All-NSIC in placing third in the triple jump.

Former Husky thrower Cassie Cardinal also earned an All-NSIC nod during the indoor season last year in finishing third in the shot put (13.94m).

The Huskies enter the indoor championships with athletes ranked in the top 10 in the conference in the 3,000m (Sam Sunstrom – 5th), 5,000m (Sunstrom – 4th and McKenzie Holt – 8th), 4x400 relays (Emily Yeager, Jasmine Grant, Kaylee Glover, Hanna Shank – 7th), long jump (Yalartai – 4th), triple jump (Yalartai – 1st and Abby Jungwirth – 7th). Sunstrom (5,000m) and Yalartai (triple and long jump) have both achieved NCAA DII provisional qualifying marks this season. Natalie Gottschalk, who finished fourth in the indoor pentathlon at the NSIC Indoor Championships on Feb. 12, also has reached NCAA DII provisional qualifying standards with 3,544 points.
