Outdoor Track Has Sam Sunstrom and Patience Yalartai Chosen As NSIC Athletes To Watch

Huskies Start Outdoor Season at Hamline Invite This Weekend
BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The St. Cloud State track & field program saw seniors Sam Sunstrom and Patience Yalartai chosen as NSIC athletes to watch. The team was picked to place 10th in the annual 2017 NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced this afternoon.
The SCSU women's team picked up 91 points to place tied for 10th of the 15 teams in the NSIC. The predicted order of finish was Minnesota State (192 points), University of Mary (173 points), Winona State (162 points), Augustana (153 points), Minnesota Duluth (149 points), Northern State (115 points), Concordia-St. Paul (113 points), MSU Moorhead (109 points), Sioux Falls (98 points), St. Cloud State (91 points), Southwest Minnesota State (61 points), Wayne State (58 points), Bemidji State (44 points), Minot State (39 points) and Upper Iowa (18 points). Minnesota State earned 13 of the 14 first-place votes to finish ahead of the field.
Sunstrom was SCSU's NSIC Track Athlete to Watch, while Yalartai was the school's NSIC Field Athlete to Watch.
Sunstrom finished third and was all-conference during the indoor season in the 5,000m. Earlier in the fall, Sunstrom was a USTFCCCA All-American in cross country. Last outdoor season, Sunstrom achieved All-American status by finishing ninth nationally in the 10,000m.
Yalartai is coming off an NCAA All-American indoor season in the triple jump in finishing seventh nationally in the event. She was NSIC All-Conference twice during the 2017 indoor season in winning both the triple and long jump. She was NSIC Indoor All-Conference a total of seven times in her Huskies career between the long and triple jump. Last outdoor season, Yalartai was NSIC All-Conference in the triple jump as she finished as the runner-up in the event.
Sioux Falls' Courtney Crandall was selected as the league's preseason field athlete of the year, while UMD's Emi Trost was named the preseason track athlete of the year.
The 2017 NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships are being hosted from Friday – Saturday, May 12-13 at SeaFoam Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul.
