St. Cloud, Minn. – Senior Patience Yalartai is representing St. Cloud State University at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, which gets underway this Thursday, March 9, at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. as part of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships Festival.
Â
Yalartai competes on the final day of the three-day event on Saturday, March 11, at 2:35 p.m. in the triple jump. She is in the second flight of the event and will be the sixth jumper while wearing the number #463. The top nine of the 18 that qualified will advance to the finals of the event.
Â
She is currently ranked seventh among all athletes in the indoor triple jump with her leap of 12.36m. Yalartai achieved her NCAA qualifying mark at the SDSU DII Invite on January 20. She was the event winner at the 2017 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship two weekends ago. The event win was her fourth of the season.
Yalartai has been All-NSIC in the indoor triple jump in each of her four seasons. She won the triple jump this season after placing second last year and third in both 2014 and 2015. This season, Yalartai also was a USTAFCCCA All-Region selection by finishing in the top five in the Central Region.
This is the third year that Yalartai will be competing in the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships. She competed in both the long and triple jump in 2015 and was a triple jumper qualifier last season. Â Yalartai is attempting to become the first SCSU NCAA DII Indoor All-American since Becky Schmidt earned the distinction in the long jump during the 2015 season. She needs to finish in the top eight of the event to earn All-American status.
Â
A total of 540 participants, 270 men and 270 women, will compete in the NCAA DII championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.
