The St. Cloud State University women's tennis celebrated the life of former head coach Jerry Anderson with a special pre-match ceremony on March 15 before the Huskies played the College of Saint Benedict at the Sta-Fit Tennis Center in nearby Sartell.
A member of the SCSU athletic department staff from 1998 until his untimely death in 2018, Anderson was the head coach of the men's tennis team from 1998 to 2016, posting a career record of 308-150 during his time with the program. Under Anderson's direction, the SCSU men's tennis team won nine North Central Conference championships and received 12 consecutive NCAA DII tournament bids from 2001 to 2012. He was hired as the St. Cloud State women's tennis coach in 2006 and served in this role until his death in 2018.
In 14 seasons with the Huskies women's tennis program, Anderson posted a career record of 198-136, with two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) titles and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament, bringing his combined career wins total to 506.
The match on Mar. 15 was designated as the Jerry Anderson Legacy Match and a new traveling trophy was unveiled at the match, which will go annually to the winner of the match between the Huskies and Bennies each year. CSB claimed the trophy for the first year with a 5-2 win over the Huskies on Mar. 15. A large crowd was on hand to watch the match and salute Coach Anderson.
SCSU gained victories at first singles by Feranda Morais Quintino dos Santos (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) and at fifth singles by Jill Kedrowski (6-2, 6-2). The pair also combined for a victory at first doubles with a 6-1 victory.
"Fernanda (Morais Quintino dos Santos) and Jill (Kedrowski) both had fantastic nights for us," SCSU head coach Berit Merrill said.
