The St. Cloud State University soccer team (2-1-2, 1-0-1 NSIC) capped a strong opening weekend in NSIC competition with a convincing 2-0 victory over Minnesota Crookston on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies were guided to victory by junior Tatyana Gusakow, who posted both goals in the contest for SCSU. These were Gusakow's first goals of 2019 and her third and fourth goals during her collegiate career. A forward from Crystal Lake, Ill., Gusakow scored her first goal of the game at 45:24 with an assist from teammate Claire Shea.
Gusakow then scored the game second goal of the day at 54:07, which was a header off a rebound on a shot by Shea. On the season, Shea and Gusakow pace the Huskies on offense with four points apiece. Shea has one goal and two assists, while Gusakow has the two goals this season.
In a game dominated offensively by the Huskies, SCSU outshot the Golden Eagles 32-1 in the match. Of those 32 shots, 16 were on target for SCSU as Brooke Bares and Harper DeMay each led SCSU with four shots piece in the game. Of note, the last time SCSU had more shots in a game was a victory over Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 27, 2017. In that contest, SCSU posted 36 shots vs. UMC.
In the nets, SCSU's Zoe Welsh charted her third shutout of the young season with one save to her credit. Welsh is now 2-1-2 on the season and this was her ninth career shutout with the Huskies.
The Huskies will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend with NSIC matches at Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. and Minnesota State on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. The game at CSP has been designated as NSIC Day and it will include a variety of fun activities to highlight the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which is widely recognized as one of the premiere NCAA DII athletic conferences in the nation.
SCSU will return to Husky Stadium on Oct. 4 for a match against Wayne State and Oct. 6 at home against Augustana.
