Huskies fall 4-2 to Mavericks in finale

St. Cloud State women's hockey (1-1-0, 1-1-0 WCHA) took their first loss at the hands of Minnesota State (1-3-0, 1-3-0 WCHA) by a 4-2 final on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies close the weekend with three points following their regulation win on Friday and presently stand at fourth place in the WCHA standings.
With 11:54 elapsed in the first period, Minnesota State's Jamie Nelson netted the first of her two goals off a faceoff to open the scoring. SCSU's penalty kill was tested during the opening period as they faced the disadvantage twice, but the special teams held strong and killed off both penalties.
Trailing by a goal in the second, Huskies freshman Mackenzie Bourgerie evened the score with her first collegiate goal at the 1:41 mark, taking a feed from fellow freshman Linnea Melotindos and banking the puck off a Mavericks defender just outside the crease. Minnesota State's Sydney Langseth reclaimed the visitor's lead 6:24 into the period. Just 37 seconds later, Klara Hymlarova blew past a defender after a brilliant dish from Jenniina Nylund, slipped across the slot and tossed the puck in over the right shoulder of Minnesota State's goaltender to knot the game at 2-2.
Minnesota State's Charlotte Akervick put her side ahead with a little under three minutes to play in the second, then Nelson scored her second goal three-and-a-half minutes into the third period to give Minnesota State their final two goals.
Huskies goaltender Sanni Ahola stopped a career-best 38 shots just one night after a 37-save performance. SCSU went 0-for-4 on their power play chances, but killed off five of Minnesota State's six chances. St. Cloud State blocked 16 shots, including four each by Olivia Hanson and Hymlarova. Nylund had a dominant performance in the circle, winning six of seven faceoffs (85.7%) while Laura Kluge won 12 of her chances at a 54.6% rate.
St. Cloud State travels to Duluth for a two-game series with the Bulldogs next weekend, with start times at 6:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. CST.
