
Huskies win Frederick R Baker Triangular

BEMIDJI, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University track and field team is off to a rip roaring start in 2020-21. After missing all of December and the majority of January due to COVID-19 protocols, the Huskies have won their first two team meets of the season, including Friday's Federick R. Baker Triangular in Bemidji, Minnesota. Fueled by personal records (PR) and strong individual performances, St. Cloud State state finished in first as a team with 123.5 points.
The Huskies distance runners got things off to a hot start, as three individuals scored points towards St. Cloud State's overall team score. Kassye Todd won the 3000 meter run thanks to her time of 10:50.35, while teammate Erica Conrad (Ashwaubenon, Wis. / Ashwaubenon) finished in third, scoring four points for the Huskies with a time of 11:44.66. In the mile, Clara Welhouse (Green Bay, Wis. / Green Bay) and Kaitlin Prinsen (Preston, Minn. / Fillmore Central) scored, as Welhouse finished in third with a time of 5:27.60. Prinsen finished in seventh with a time of 6:09.55. Welhouse additionally scored points in the 1000 meter run thanks to a time of 3:21.53.
St. Cloud State swept the podium in the 400 meter run, with two Huskies earning points towards the team score. Makayla Rice (Racine, Wis. / Horlick) won the event with a time of 1:00.20, while Cassidy Lackovic (Lake in the Hills, Ill. / Huntley) finished second thanks to her time of 1:00.56. Kaylee Gessay (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South) and Karla Encarnacion (Caguas, Puerto Rico / American Military Academy) also competed in the race, finishing third and fourth respectively with times of 1:01.45 and 1:04.16.
Leighten Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandinavia), Faith Lubner (Reedsville, Wis. / Reedsville) and Emelia Burris (Woodale, Ill. / Fenton) were crowned champions of the next three events. Fischer claimed the top spot in the 600 meter run with her time of 1:39.69, while Lubner recorded the top time of the day in the 60m hurdles. After clocking a time of 8.69 in prelims, Lubner won the event in finals with a time of 8.91. She additionally finished first in high jump thanks to her leap of 1.54m
Burris technically won two events for the Huskies Friday evening, as she took home the gold in both the 60m dash and long jump competitions. The senior clocked the fastest time in the 60m dash prelims at 7.65 and won the event with a time of 7.67. Perhaps her best performance of the day, though, came in long jump. After failing three of her first four jumps, Burris launched herself for 5.86 meters, winning the event by a significant margin.
Katie Lavato (Buffalo, Minn. Buffalo) and Alexis Fallow (Prairie Du Sac, Wis. / Sauk Prairie) earned big points for St. Cloud State in the 200 meter dash, finishing in fourth and sixth respectively with times of 27.89 and 29.10. The team also scored big points in the 4x400 relay, as the "A" team finished in second with a time of 4:07.23.
In addition to Lubner, several other Huskies found success in the field events, including Parker Buske (Madison, Wis. / West). The sophomore won triple jump thanks to a final jump of 11.52 meters and finished second in long jump at 5.35 meters. Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) finished fourth with a jump of 10.77 meters.
Annie Falardeau (Grand Rapids, Minn. / Grand Rapids), Dominique Buechel (Chilton, Wis. / Chilton) and Dacoda Zimmerman (Racine, Wis. / Horlick) were all outstanding in the throws events Friday afternoon and evening. Falardeau finished second in both shot put and weight throw with throws of 12.74 and 15.45 meters respectively. Buechel finished third in shot put with a throw of 12.51 meters, and Zimmerman was third in weight throw at 13.96 meters.
Thanks to these and several other strong performance, St. Cloud State won the meet as a team with 123.50 points. The Huskies will compete in one final meet on Friday, February 19 before the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championships.
