SARTELL, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University tennis team did not take a break, even though it's spring break. Though the team didn't travel, the Huskies played two matches during the "off week" and earned a key nonconference victory over Minnesota State University Saturday afternoon. In fact, St. Cloud State swept the Mavericks for the second time this season, downing Minnesota State 7-0 to improve to 2-6 overall with a 1-5 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.
The Huskies earned an early point in doubles play, as they won all three matches and only dropped four games in the process. St. Cloud State's No. 1 team of Jill Kedrowski (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) and Francis Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii / Dixie State) dropped just one game in their 6-1 route of Tyanna Washa and Lauren Goth. The No. 3 team of Sam Fitzpatrick (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) and Kylee Frisbie (Foley, Minn. / Foley) found similar success, defeating Sarah Johnson and Abigail Clayton by an identical score of 6-1, while the No. 2 team of Shanna Kinny (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) and Olivia Fredrickson (Fridley, Minn. / Fridley) won their doubles match 6-2.
The Huskies success continued in singles play, as they won all six matches to clinch the 7-0 sweep. Kinny found the most success Saturday afternoon, as she won her respective match without dropping a game or set. As the team's No. 3 singles player, the sophomore defeated Goth 6-0, 6-0 to earn an early second point for St. Cloud State.
In fact, five of the six Huskies won in straight sets. Goldsmith returned to form as the No. 1 player, defeating Washa 6-1 in the opening set before downing her 6-4 in set number two. Fitzpatrick won her opening set 6-3 as the No. 2 singles player before downing Dee Dokken 6-0 to win in straight sets.
Kedrowski extended her win streak in singles play to three consecutive matches, as she defeated Kjerstin Hall as the team's No. 4 singles player 6-1, 6-2, while Frisbee earned a key 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 6 slot.
Fredrickson needed all three sets to defeat Clayton at the No. 5 singles slot, but the junior persevered to earn a victory. After winning the opening set without dropping a game, Fredrickson dropped the second set 3-6 and needed the third set tiebreaker to win the match. The junior rose to the occasion, taking down Clayton 10-8 in the third to win the match 6-0, 3-6, 10-8.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 2-6, and the team is still 1-5 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, March 20 when they face the College of Saint Benedict at 5:30 p.m. in Sartell, Minnesota. Due to Saint Ben's COVID-19 policies, fans will not be allowed to attend the match at this time.
