
Tennis closes regular season at Minnesota-Duluth

DULUTH, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University women's tennis team's 2021 regular season came to an end Friday afternoon in Duluth, Minnesota. The Huskies battled their way through all types of adversity in the spring season after missing the majority of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In its final match of the year, St. Cloud State came up just short to Minnesota-Duluth, falling to the Bulldogs by a final score of 4-3.
Things were rolling the Huskies' way to open the match, as they one two of three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead over Minnesota-Duluth. St. Cloud State's No. 1 team of Frances Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii / Dixie State) and Jill Kedrowski (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) started things off on the right foot, as they dominated the Bulldogs top team of Mallory Lithum and Shay Callaway to win the match 6-2. Shanna Kinny (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) and Sam Fitzpatrick (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) took care of business at the No. 2 team slot, using a late break to defeat Natalie Caholl and Isabel Thiner 7-5 and secure the early point for the Huskies.
The No. 3 team of Ellen Baranczyk (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) and Emma Brunkow (Lake City, Minn. / Lake City) battled in their match with Abby Johnson and Emily Rahrik but ultimately fell by a final score of 6-2.
After earning a huge point in doubles play, St. Cloud State looked to secure the match victory by winning three of the six singles matches. Goldsmith provided a quick win for the Huskies, as she defeated Sophie Lynch as the team's No. 1 singles player in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Kedrowski then won the team's second singles match of the night, as she rallied after dropping the first set 6-4 to win the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
It looked like St. Cloud State was destined to win its sixth match of the season and fourth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play, as Kinny won her opening set 6-2 over Shay Callaway. The Bulldogs No. 4 singles player then won the second set 6-2 to force the decisive third set. Though Kinny battled, three breaks resulted in a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win for Callaway.
The Huskies looked for wins at the No. 2, 5 and 6 singles slots but came up short in all three matches. As the team's No. 2 singles player, Fitzpatrick fell in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, while Brunkow fell as the No. 5 singles player 6-4, 6-2. Baranczyk also fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
After the loss, St. Cloud State closes the regular season with an overall record of 5-9 and a 3-8 record in NSIC play. The Huskies are currently ninth in the NSIC standings and will wait to see if they qualify for the NSIC Tournament, which will take place April 23-24 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
