SARTELL, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University tennis team is back to its winning ways. After suffering a loss to Bemidji State in their last Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match, the Huskies rebounded with a conference win Friday evening, defeating Upper Iowa University by a final score of 6-1.
St. Cloud State earned its first point of the night in doubles play, as the Huskies took two of three matches to take the early 1-0 lead. No. 1 team of Francis Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii / Dixie State) earned the first win of the night for St. Cloud State, downing Jessa Michieli and Alejandra Abella by a final score of 6-2. First years Ellen Barancyzk (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) and Emma Brunkow (Lake City, Minn. / Lake City) earned the team's first win of the night at the No. 3 doubles spot, as they earned an early break against Elaina Wall and Mya Herrmann to win the match by a final score of 6-3.
The No. 2 doubles team of Shanna Kinny (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) and Sam Fitzpatrick (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) nearly completed the sweep for St. Cloud State but came up short in their match against Varvara Ogordnikova and Lina Ziani. Despite matching the Peacocks No. 2 doubles team point for point in the early stages of the match, a late break spelled doom for the duo, as they fell by a final score of 6-3.
With a 1-0 advantage, the Huskies solidified their lead in singles play, winning five of six matches to earn a 6-1 win. Goldsmith and Kinny won without breaking a sweat, as their opponents retired before the match began, allowing St. Cloud State to earn wins at the No. 1 and 4 singles slots. Kedrowski and Brunkow won in straight sets as the team's No. 3 and 5 singles players, with Kedrowski winning 6-2, 6-0 and Brunkow by a score of 6-1, 6-3.
Barancyzk also earned a key win as the team's No. 6 singles player, as she played one of the most intense matches of the night. After dropping the first match 6-3, the first year rebounded with a 6-2 win to force the superbreaker. Barancyzk then pulled out the victory, winning the superbreaker 10-5 to win the set 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Fitzpatrick suffered the Huskies lone singles loss of the night, falling as the No. 2 player 6-2, 6-0.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 4-7 and the team is 3-6 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Sunday, April 11 when they host Winona State at 1 p.m. at Sta-Fit in Sartell, Minnesota. St. Cloud State will honor its two seniors, Kedrowski and Goldsmith, before Sunday's match.
