ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Davenport on Friday evening in the program's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. The Huskies' lone goal came in the 62nd minute as Philip Caputo played a good feed ahead to Emmanuel Iwe. The Huskies' leader in goals broke down a defender while attacking from the left, passing across to Andres Garcia who gave SCSU a fantastic finish with the left, netting his first collegiate goal to make it a one-score game. Garcia and Iwe each recorded three shots on goal.
TURNING POINT
Early in the second half, Huskies goalkeeper Dawson Fairchild leapt to his left and made a brilliant save with his right hand, deflecting a shot just above the crossbar. Just under a minute later, Fairchild dove to his right and snagged a second unbelievable stop. The Huskies defense felt the momentum swing after the two saves, dominating possession the rest of the way.

"I was really proud of our effort tonight. To go on the road, start our GLIAC conference season in such a magnificent facility against a good team that relatively recently won a national title, I was pleased with how we responded. We went down 2-0, and instead of folding we rose up to it. The goal was a terrific finish by Andres Garcia off clever and unselfish play by Philip Caputo and Emmanuel Iwe. I thought what was most telling was that with two minutes left in the game we were chasing to get the tie, and they understood that they were in a real game and I think that's progress because there were moments in the first half where we looked at times a little sorry for ourselves. But this is how it is, it's a 14-game league and it will be hard both home and away. I'm really glad with how our guys responded. The real test will be how we do when we come back on Sunday and have to do it again. This Friday-Sunday slot will be tough work for us. Jake Leonard, Nick Ashton - I thought were both terrific off the bench tonight, as was Mika Folstad. Charlie Pritchard, Eddie Saydee and Vukota Mastilovic were very, very good on the back and then Dawson Fairchild made a couple nice saves which is what you have to do. So, progress. If the first four games of the season were about progress, then tonight progress was made. It doesn't equate to moral victories, but I think we made progress from minute one to minute 90 and that's most important."
