ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State Athletics community mourns the loss of former Wrestling coach Dr. Ken Cox, who passed away on Saturday, February 5.
Dr. Cox served as head coach of SCSU Wrestling from September 1963 through the 1966-67 season, coaching seven All-Americans and 10 conference champions while finishing top-five in the NAIA at the conclusion of each of his four campaigns. He also taught as an assistant professor of health and physical education, served as an assistant coach to the football team and was a trainer for the Athletics department.
He guided legendary Huskies wrestlers such as Jim and Dave Hazewinkel, Gary Smith, Mike Rybak, Rob Ruedy and Harvey Shaw during his time as head coach, notably coaching Jim Hazewinkel to become the program's first four-time All-American. During his full coaching career, Dr. Cox coached 16 NAIA All-Americans, three Olympians, eight National Champions and numerous NCAA All-Americans. The Hazewinkels and Larry Heiniemi each placed in the final 1964 U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling trials under his tutelage. His national success at SCSU helped lay the groundwork for the history of excellence displayed by St. Cloud State Wrestling.
Prior to coaching, Dr. Cox began his athletics career at East Stroudsburg University where he was a three-sport letterwinner between 1951 and 1955. In 1956 he represented the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team and was a finalist in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
He served active duty in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1956 and retired in 1985 from the USAR as a Colonel after over 32 years of service.
Dr. Cox earned his doctorate at the University of Washington, held an M.S. from Washington and a M.A. from Cal State-Northridge along with his B.S. earned at East Stroudsburg.
