Arason earns heptathlon title at NSIC Championship

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The St. Cloud State University track and field team got off to a hot start at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Fifth year senior Hannah Arason (Grand Forks, N.D. / Minnesota) provided Friday's highlight, as she earned a first place finish in the heptathlon. Junior distance runner Cheresa Bouley (Zimmerman, Minn. / Zimmerman) earned a sixth place finish in the steeplechase, helping the Huskies close the first full day of competition in ninth place with 15 points.
HIGHLIGHTS
Arason completed the two-day competition of the heptathlon Friday evening, becoming the first Husky to win the prestigious event since St. Cloud State rejoined the NSIC in 2009. After competing in four events on Thursday, Arason sat in second place in the heptathlon standings as she opened the competition with a personal record (PR) time in the 100m hurdles of 14.63. The fifth year transfer from Minnesota followed up that performance with top-5 finishes in high jump (1.65m) and shot put (10.66m), allowing her to remain within striking distance of Arika Robinson, who sat in first with 2294 points.
Arason made up the difference and then some of Friday, scoring 2946 points on day two of the competition to claim the NSIC title with 5205 total. Arason once again finished top-5 in the four Friday events, coming in second in javelin with a throw of 44.24 meters to take the lead with one event remaining. Thanks to her 2:27.02 time in the 800m run, Arason was able to hold that lead, defeating Robinson by 137 to become St. Cloud State's first champion in the heptathlon since rejoining the conference in 2008.
In addition to her NSIC Championship, Arason finished seventh in the high jump competition thanks her to jump of 1.65m. The top-8 finish brought Arason's point total to 11, as the fifth year senior accounted for over 75% of the team's points in the first two days of competition.
Bouley additionally scored points toward the Huskies overall team score, finishing sixth in the women's steeplechase with a time of 11:23.88. Clara Welhouse (Green Bay, Wis. / Southwest) took tenth in the race with a time of 11:36.31.
Several other St. Cloud State student-athletes competed the NISC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. Greta Freed (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) and Cambrie Kowal (Camdenton, Mo. / Camdenton) both competed in the 10,000m run, clocking times of 41:54.75 and 42:58.87 respectively. Shelby Roming (Ankeny, Iowa / Ankeny) earned a top-15 finish in the 100m hurdles in her NSIC Championships debut, finishing in 11th with a time of 15.12, while Marianna Gierra-Reese (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) clocked a time of 1:03.76 in the 400m dash.
In the field events, Faith Lubner (Reedsville, Wis. / Reedsville), Parker Buske (Madison, Wis. / East) and Roming competed in long jump, while Dacoda Zimmerman (Racine, Wis. / Horlock) earned a top-10 finish in shot put with a throw of 12.96m.

After Friday, St. Cloud State sits in ninth place with 15 total points. The Huskies will resume competition in the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. CT in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
