AUSTIN, TEXAS - St. Cloud State University softball's Haley McFarlane (Swisher, Iowa / Cedar Rapids Prairie) will need to make more room in her trophy case. After earning Academic All-District honors from the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) three weeks ago, the fifth year senior was voted Second Team Academic All-America by the organization Tuesday morning.Â
McFarlane is the first Husky in 13 years to earn Academic All-America honors, joining former standouts Rachel Haines (2008, 2009), Amy Anderson (2002), Stacy Witters (2000), Michelle Lechner (1999) and Shelly Jensen (1992) as the only St. Cloud State softball student-athletes to garner the award. She is additionally one of six softball players from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) named to one of the three Academic All-America teams, joining student-athletes from Augustana, Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State.Â
McFarlane claimed one of the five infielder Second Team Academic All-America spots and does so after a career season both on the field and in the classroom. The fifth year senior maintained a 4.00 GPA as a graduate student in 2022, studying Sports Management with an emphasis in Kinesiology. On the field, McFarlane put up career numbers despite playing the entire conference season with a torn ACL. In her final season with the Huskies, McFarlane appeared and started all 54 games as either St. Cloud State's first or third baseman and hit a career high .363 with 58 hits in 160 plate appearances. Of those 58 hits, 20 were for extra bases, as McFarlane tallied nine doubles, one triple and 10 home runs during the season, helping the Huskies break the program record for single-season home runs with 60 total.Â
In addition to her impressive hitting numbers, McFarlane was one of the most consistent infielders in the NSIC, as she committed just four errors at the corners in 218 chances. Additionally, just one of those errors occurred when she played first base, making McFarlane one of the most consistent utility players in the conference.Â
The CoSIDA Academic All-America teams are selected by the sports information directors and athletic communication representatives across the nation at the Division I, II and III level. Honorees must have been a First Team Academic All-District recipient in their respective district and nominated by their institution's sports information director.
