St. Cloud State Women's Basketball Set to Host NSIC South Opponents

Huskies to host WSU & UIU
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's basketball team gets ready to host NSIC South Division Opponents at Halenbeck Hall this weekend. The Huskies will host Winona State on Jan. 13 and Upper Iowa on Jan. 14.

Friday's game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off while Saturday's game is set for 3:30 at Halenbeck Hall. The NSIC Network will provide the game streams while Steve Linzmeier, the Voice of Huskies Basketball, will provide live audio coverage on the Varsity Network App. Live stats will be available on the SCSU women's basketball schedule page.

A Look Back
Last weekend the Huskies faced-off against No. 5 Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. The Huskies suffered a tough loss to No. 5 Minnesota State last Friday at the Taylor Center in Mankato, MN. Minnesota State came out of the gate strong to lead St. Cloud 43-28 at half. Despite St. Cloud going a 10-0 scoring in the third, the Huskies were unable to slow Minnesota State as they kept pushing on offense. In the end, the Huskies fell 86-61.

On Saturday, the Huskies rebounded and bounced back against Concordia-St. Paul. St. Cloud took a double-digit lead in the second period to end the half up 35-25 over the Bears. The Huskies went on a 20-5 scoring run in the fourth quarter which CSP was unable to respond to. St. Cloud ended the day with a 69-49 victory. Tori Peschel entered the Huskies record book with her 17 rebounds against CSP. That number ties her for second all-time most rebounds in a single game.

St. Cloud State Huskies
The Huskie sits 10-4 overall, 7-3 in conference play. St. Cloud has been holding strong at second place in the NSIC North Division and 4th overall in the conference. Minnesota Duluth currently holds the top spot in the NSIC with an undefeated conference record. St. Cloud sits three games behind the Bulldogs. St. Cloud's defense is their specialty as they have the second-best scoring defense in the NSIC surrendering 58 points to opponents. Katrina Theis leads the Huskies with 15.2 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game. Additionally, Theis holds the best field goal percentage in the conference at .566. Tori Peschel leads the team in rebounds averaging 8.0 per game which ranks her third in the NSIC for rebounding.

Winona State Warriors
Winona State enters the weekend 9-7 overall, 3-7 in NSIC play. The Warriors sit at 4th in the south division and 12th overall. Winona State opened up their season with a 7-0 start until they lost their next four games in conference play. The Warriors just snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over Bemidji State last weekend. Alex Dornfeld leads the team with 12.8 points per game and 9.1 rebounds. Additionally, she has a league-leading five double-doubles this season.

Upper Iowa Peacocks
Upper Iowa goes into the weekend 6-9 overall, 2-8 in NSIC play, sits 7th in the NSIC South Division, and 13th overall in the conference. UIU split last weekend with a win over Bemidji State and loss to Minnesota Crookston. The Peacocks are led by Lydia Haack who is averaging 16.7 points per game and 5.7 rebounds. Haack earned NSIC South Division Player of the Week honors this past week. This is her second NSIC weekly honor as she earned honors back on 11/14/22. Last week, UIU's Katie Tornstrom earned NSIC weekly honors for helping Upper Iowa snap an 18-game losing streak to Winona State.
