
Huskies Track & Field looks ahead to NSIC Outdoor Championships

Competition begins Thursday, May 11 in St. Paul at Sea Foam Stadium
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Track & Field prepares for the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Championships this week at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul. The Huskies begin competition on Thursday, May 11 with the conference meet running through Saturday, May 13.
LAST TIME ON THE TRACK
Graduate jumper Paola Brena won the High Jump with a 1.71m clear as four St. Cloud State Track & Field student-athletes established new personal bests at the Maverick Open #2 in Mankato on Saturday afternoon. The running events opened with a pair of advancements in the 100 Meter and 100 Meter Hurdles Prelims as Katie Lavato (12.62s) and Shelby Romig (15.01s) earned the No. 9 and No. 5 seeds in their respective events. Mariana Guerra-Reese ran a blistering 58.79s to take second in the 400 Meter, establishing a new personal best in the event. Lavato took eighth in the 100 Meter Finals with a 12.54s run, then Shelby Romig followed by taking fourth in the 100 Hurdles at 15.08s. Cheresa Bouley (2:21.06) took second in the 800 Meter, joined in the top 10 by Jaileen Medina (2:40.21). Brooklyn Brouse gave the Huskies another runner-up finish with a 1:04.55 run in the 400 Hurdles, followed in seventh by Makaylin Christenson (1:09.98). Greta Freed (5:09.10) and Cambrie Kowal (5:18.48) closed things out by going No. 8 and No. 12 in the 1500 Meter. Paola Brena's win in the High Jump headlined a strong SCSU effort in the field as the grad student cleared 1.71m to top the podium while Ainhoa Toquero added a top 10 mark at 1.50m. Dacoda Zimmerman launched a 46.26m heave in the Hammer Toss to take fifth – crushing her previous personal best by nearly four meters. Kasey Parish placed fourth in the Javelin with a 34.66m throw while Ainhoa Toquero added a PR of 21.89m. Shelby Romig kept the personal bests coming in the Long Jump, leaping 5.40m for seventh followed by Ava Wilmanns marking 4.76m for a top 14 finish.
NATIONALLY RANKED HUSKIES
Two Huskies can be found across the NCAA DII rankings entering the week, led by No. 7 Paola Brena (1.73m) in the High Jump while Parker Buske (12.09m) ranks No. 31 nationally in the Triple Jump.
GOING THE DISTANCE
The SCSU distance group has enjoyed a strong Outdoor season, as Greta Freed (39:39.07) and Cambrie Kowal (40:44.28) currently rank No. 9 and No. 13 respectively in the NSIC's 10,000 Meter. Cheresa Bouley (11:18.96), Clara Welhouse (11:36.80) and Erica Conrad (12:18.46) each rank in the top 16 of the 3000 Meter Steeplechase rankings while Mariana Guerra-Reese (2:17.66) headlines the middle distance corps at No. 15 in the 800 Meter.

Sophomore middle distance standout Brooklyn Brouse enters the conference meet ranked No. 8 in the NSIC with a 1:03.25 time in the 400 Hurdles while landing at No. 18 in the 400 Meter with a 58.58s low mark.
CLEARING THE BAR
St. Cloud State's historically strong jumps group has continued their success this spring as Paola Brena (1.73m) ranks No. 2 in the NSIC and No. 7 nationally in the High Jump while Julia Rowles (1.64m) is at No. 9 in the conference standings. Ainhoa Toquero (1.58m) checks in at No. 17, giving the Huskies a potential three podiums at the conference meet in the event.
PRESEASON POLLING
St. Cloud State Track & Field was picked to finish 10th in the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Huskies have placed top 10 in the NSIC Outdoor Championships in 11 of 13 conference meets during the program's Northern Sun membership, reaching as high as fifth in 2009. Last season, St. Cloud State placed 12th with Hannah Arason earning the NSIC Championship in the Heptathlon while adding an All-NSIC mark in the Javelin. Sophomore middle distance runner Brooklyn Brouse and graduate student jumper Paola Brena were respectively named the Huskies' Track and Field Athletes to Watch entering the 2023 Outdoor campaign. Brouse ran on three top-10 finishing events at the 2022 Outdoor Championships, taking ninth in the 400 Meter Hurdles and 4x400 Meter Relay while taking 10th in the 4x100 Meter Relay. Brena is fresh off a runner-up mark in the High Jump at the Indoor Championships and was a First Team Outdoor All-American in the High Jump at Franklin Pierce in 2019. Under head coach Sam Kettenhofen, 19 student-athletes have earned All-NSIC finishes at the Outdoor Championships while adding a Conference Champion in each of the last two conference meets.
