Paola Brena wins High Jump with 1.71m clear, four athletes establish new personal bests
MANKATO, Minn. – Graduate jumper Paola Brena won the High Jump with a 1.71m clear as four St. Cloud State Track & Field student-athletes established new personal bests at the Maverick Open #2 in Mankato on Saturday afternoon.
The running events opened with a pair of advancements in the 100 Meter and 100 Meter Hurdles Prelims as Katie Lavato (12.62s) and Shelby Romig (15.01s) earned the No. 9 and No. 5 seeds in their respective events. Mariana Guerra-Reese ran a blistering 58.79s to take second in the 400 Meter, establishing a new personal best in the event. Lavato took eighth in the 100 Meter Finals with a 12.54s run, then Shelby Romig followed by taking fourth in the 100 Hurdles at 15.08s. Cheresa Bouley (2:21.06) took second in the 800 Meter, joined in the top 10 by Jaileen Medina (2:40.21). Brooklyn Brouse gave the Huskies another runner-up finish with a 1:04.55 run in the 400 Hurdles, followed in seventh by Makaylin Christenson (1:09.98). Greta Freed (5:09.10) and Cambrie Kowal (5:18.48) closed things out by going No. 8 and No. 12 in the 1500 Meter.
Paola Brena's win in the High Jump headlined a strong SCSU effort in the field as the grad student cleared 1.71m to top the podium while Ainhoa Toquero added a top 10 mark at 1.50m. Dacoda Zimmerman launched a 46.26m heave in the Hammer Throw to take fifth – crushing her previous personal best by nearly four meters. Kasey Parish placed fourth in the Javelin with a 34.66m throw while Ainhoa Toquero added a PR of 21.89m. Shelby Romig kept the personal bests coming in the Long Jump, leaping 5.40m for seventh followed by Ava Wilmanns marking 4.76m for a top 14 finish.
