Mastilovic scores SCSU’s first goal of 2023 season
FAYETTE, Iowa. – After getting off to another slow start, the St. Cloud State Men's Soccer team (0-2-1, 0-0-0 GLIAC) dropped Thursday night's match against Upper Iowa 5-1, in Fayette.
The Peacocks (2-0-0, 0-0-0 GLVC) went up 2-0 in the first 40 minutes of the game before SCSU got on the board, cutting the deficit to 2-1 after a beautiful cross from freshman midfielder Ronaldo Lopez (Baraboo, Wis.) was put in the back of the net by the head of captain fifth-year defender Vukota Mastilovic (Belgrade, Serbia) with less than five seconds remaining in the first half. The Peacocks went on to add three more goals to their total in the first 15 minutes of the second half, bringing the scoreline to 5-1.
UIU shot 16 times, putting 11 on frame, while the Huskies shot 14 times, putting six on frame. SCSU made one more save than the Peacocks, with six and both teams took five corner kicks.
TOP HUSKIES
"We renewed a good rivalry with Upper Iowa and even though they left the GLIAC for the GLVC, it's still a game that has some meaning for us."
"I thought we played a good first half but we gave up a couple of silly goals. Then we did really well to score late in the half and bring it tight... in the second half we came out with some renewed purpose and energy and probably could've gotten a couple of goals early in the half, but weren't able to convert them...the longer we chased the game, the more we exposed ourselves at the back and that happens sometimes when you're fighting for a win and coming back from being down and that's indeed what happened."
"Our goal in the four games of preconference play was to get ourselves as ready, competitive, and organized as possible for GLIAC play, and I thought today was an improvement over Sunday's performance and result [against MSU-Denver], despite the loss we saw lots of good things."
"We found out that we have some depth in the squad and we have some character. We also saw lots of things to correct and improve upon as we look forward to Sunday...we have one game left against Truman State on Sunday to sharpen ourselves up and get finally organized for the opening of conference play against Saginaw Valley State in eight days."
On players who stood out... "Vuke Mastilovic, as always, was a strong presence in our back-four and Ronaldo Lopez provided a great spark off the bench, moving us into the attacking third."
