St. Cloud State Tennis Drops Season Opener 4-3 in Tightly Contested Match

Broadwell and Schaefer earn first career wins
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (0-1, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) fell in their season opener to Winona State (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) 4-3 Friday evening. The Huskies captured the doubles point after winning two of the three matches but were unable to finish the match in singles play: losing four of the six matches.
DOUBLES
St. Cloud State won the doubles point as the junior duo of Maria Paz Aoki (Marcos Paz, Argentina) and Johana Brower (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won at the No. 2 spot. The duo defeated Lainy Ristau and Elysia Beynon 6-2. Senior Maria Molitor (Delano, Minn.) and freshman Brooklyn Broadwell (Thief River Falls, Minn.) battled back and forth in the No. 3 spot with Ally Burger and Miranda Daulong but came out on top with a 7-5 victory. Junior Claudia Muñoz Perez (Tarragona, Spain) and freshman Lara-Maria Schaefer (Nuremberg, Germany) were defeated 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles spot. Last season, the Huskies accumulated an 8-1 record when winning the doubles point but were unable to close out the victory tonight.
SINGLES
In singles play, the Huskies dropped four of the six matches as the Warriors earned a come from behind victory. Molitor was defeated 2-6, 1-6 at the No. 4 spot by Clara Thoemke as the WSU tied up the match at 1-1. Schaefer picked up her first career victory in the No. 6 spot as she defeated Ally Burger 6-3, 6-0 to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. Winona State would pick up the next two points as Brower fell 6-2, 0-6, 7-10 at the No. 3 spot and Paz Aoki fell 3-6, 4-6 in the No. 1 spot. Trailing 3-2 and in need of back-to-back wins, Broadwell captured her second victory of the evening and her first career singles victory as she defeated Elysia Beynon 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot. With the match tied at 3-3, Muñoz Perez won the first set of her match in the No. 2 spot 6-3 against Skylar Gary. Gary would win the second set 6-2 and send the match to the pivotal third set with the victory on the line. In what was a close third set, Gary would come away with a 10-6 victory, giving Winona State their second win of the season. The loss snapped the Huskies' two-game season opening winning streak as they start the season off 0-1.

St. Cloud State will return to action on Friday, February 16 as the take on Minnesota Crookston (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) in Grand Forks, N.D. The match is currently scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT. The Huskies have won 23 consecutive matches against the Golden Eagles.
