St. Cloud State Tennis Cruises to 6-1 Win over Duluth on Senior Day

Huskies win first conference match of the season
Sartell, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (4-9, 1-6 NSIC) picked up their first conference victory of the season as they cruised to a 6-1 win over Minnesota Duluth Saturday, afternoon. The Huskies took the doubles point after taking all three matches and followed that up with five straight set singles wins.
Doubles
SCSU got off to a strong start as they swept the Bulldogs in doubles. Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer came up with a clean 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot to give the Huskies their first win of the day. Brooklyn Broadwell and Gibby Chapman followed that up with a 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot as St. Cloud State clinched the doubles point. Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki completed the sweep for the Huskies with a 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot.
Singles
Moving into singles play holding a 1-0 lead, St. Cloud State kept it rolling as Schaefer, Muñoz Perez, and Oriana Grott all captured straight set singles wins to clinch the match for SCSU. Brower tacked on her second win of the day with a straight set win in the No. 2 spot as the lead grew to 5-0. Paz Aoki battled back-and-forth in the No. 4 spot, but would ultimately be defeated 6-1, 2-6, 8-10. Broadwell gave the Huskies their final point of the day with a straight set win in the No. 6 spot to finalize the score at 6-1.

- St. Cloud State is now 59-18 all-time against Minnesota Duluth.
- Head Coach Berit Merrill picked up her 43rd career win which puts her in a tie with Dee Whitlock for the third most wins in program history.
- Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer moved to 4-5 as a duo this year and are 4-3 in conference play. Muñoz Perez is 4-5 in doubles while Schaefer is 8-5.
- Brooklyn Broadwell and Gibby Chapman picked up their fourth win of the season and are 4-2 as a tandem. Broadwell is now 11-2 in doubles and won her tenth consecutive doubles match. The win now puts her in a tie with Kelly Freese for most consecutive doubles wins since 2008 with 10 straight doubles wins. Chapman is now 9-3 in doubles with a 6-1 conference record.
- Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki won their third match of the season and sit at 3-8. Brower is 4-9 in doubles while Paz Aoki is 3-8.
- Lara-Maria Schaefer won her ninth singles match of the season and moves to 9-4. This was her eighth straight set victory and third consecutive win.
- Claudia Muñoz Perez won her second singles match and is 2-7 on the year. This was her second straight set victory.
- Oriana Grott captured her fifth singles win of the season and is 5-6. This was Grott's fourth straight set win.
- Johana Brower moved to 4-9 in singles play on the year after her fourth straight set win.
- Brooklyn Broadwell picked up her fifth singles win of the season and is 5-8 overall. This was her fourth straight set victory and third consecutive singles win.
