Berit Merrill will begin her eighth season as head coach of the St. Cloud State University women’s tennis team in 2026. In her seven years as head coach, Merrill posts an all-time record of 43-68. Merrill is tied for third winningest coach in program history and has guided SCSU to three consecutive NSIC Tournament appearances in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Merrill took over the program in 2019 after she replaced longtime SCSU men’s and women’s tennis coach Jerry Anderson, who passed away in the fall of 2018.
A 2004 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Merrill played tennis for the Huskies from 2001 to 2004. She went on to earn a Master of Science in College Counseling and Student Development from SCSU in 2009 and has worked as an undergraduate academic advisor at the University since 2008.
As a tennis coach, Merrill served as an assistant coach on the women’s tennis team at the College of St. Benedict from 2006 to 2013. At the high school level, Merrill coached various high school teams in central Minnesota and served as an assistant tennis coach at nearby St. Cloud Tech High School. She was a tennis instructor for the Bowe Tennis Academy, an academy for dedicated junior and high school tennis athletes in central Minnesota, from 2001 to 2007.
As an undergraduate at SCSU, Merrill played both number one singles and number one doubles during her playing career which spanned from 2001 to 2004. In four seasons at SCSU, Merrill posted a 73-30 singles record and a 67-22 record in doubles play. Merrill is currently fourth all-time in total matches won with 140, sixth all-time in total win loss percentage with 73%, third all-time in singles matches won, and 12th all-time in total matches played. She served as a team captain during her college career and earned ITA academic honors along with All-North Central Conference academic honors. She also helped SCSU gain NCAA tournament bids in 2003 and 2004.
"I am thrilled to coach for my alma mater, as well as have the opportunity to coach alongside my college coach Larry Sundby, who I greatly respect," Merrill said.
A resident of St. Cloud, Minn., Merrill graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School.
