St. Cloud State Softball Hits Six Home Runs in Day Two Sweep of Florida Trip

Huskies outlast Montana State Billings and Staten Island (N.Y.), extend winning streak to five
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – St. Cloud State Softball (13-4, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) picked up two wins on its second day of games in Florida at THE Spring Games. The Huskies beat Montana State Billings (6-12-1, 0-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference), 7-5 in its first game and defeated Staten Island (N.Y.) (4-4, 0-0 East Coast Conference), 8-7 in the second game that went two extra innings.
SCSU scored 15 runs and hit an incredible five home runs over the two games. Redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) went 3-5, hitting two home runs and driving in six runs. Freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) went 4-7 and hit a home run.
Junior left fielder Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.), fifth-year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) and freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) were the other Huskies to tally home runs.
Sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) picked up a win and a save after 8.0 innings of relief across the two games.
GAME ONE ST. CLOUD STATE 7, MONTANA STATE BILLINGS 5
Montana State Billings got on the scoreboard first after knocking in a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. SCSU struck right back, scoring three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Frechette drove in two of the Huskies' runs on a home run.
MSU Billings leadoff hitter in the bottom of the second hit a solo home run, tying the game at three. SCSU was able to retake the lead back in the top of the third after Frechette knocked Weinberger in with a sacrifice fly.
The Huskies added to their lead in the top of the fourth by scoring a pair of unearned runs after a Yellowjacket error. Weiss opened the fifth inning with a solo shot to center field, extending the SCSU lead to four. MSUB cut into the lead with a two-run blast in the bottom of the inning, but the Huskies held on the rest of the way, earning a 7-5 victory.
Top Huskies
SCSU gave up another first inning run, trailing 1-0 going into the home half. Holzhueter hit a leadoff home run and Weinberger followed it up with a solo shot of her own two batters later, giving the Huskies its first lead of the game.
The Dolphins brought the game back even in the top of the third, but Frechette crushed a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth. SCSU added one more run in the inning after senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.) doubled, scoring Holzhueter, bringing the score to 5-2.
CSI cut its deficit to one after scoring twice in the top of the fifth, but Holmes hit a solo home run in the home half to push the Huskies lead back up to two. The Dolphins scored twice in the top of the seventh and SCSU was unable to finish the game in regulation.
In the eighth inning, each team recorded a run, sending the game into another extra inning. The Huskies held Staten Island scoreless in the top of the ninth, and Quesnell scored the walk-off run in the bottom half of the inning.

- Frechette extended her hitting streak to four games, while recording her 10th hit of the season. She has two games with 2+ hits this year. She surpassed 10 RBI on the season and increased her batting average to .294.
- Quesnell tallied her 10th hit of the season. She has three multi-hit games this season. She has matched her career single season best in doubles already, with two. She scored her 35th career run.
- Weinberger is on a three-game hitting streak. She recorded her fifth double of the season and sixth multi-hit game. She has 20 hits this season and is nearing 200 for her career.
- Stallings pitched a season-high 4.0 innings in her fifth appearance of the season, picking up her second win.
- Porter picked up her sixth save of the season.

- It was SCSU's first extra inning game of the season and first since the last game of last season, a 4-3 eight-inning loss to Augustana in the NSIC Tournament. It was the first nine inning game since April of last season against Southwest Minnesota State. SCSU was on a three game extra innings losing streak and with its last win coming on March 20, 2022, against Central Missouri.
- The Huskies have won five games in a row and has outscored its opponents, 34-16 during that stretch.
- Frechette hit her fourth home run of the season and third in the last five games. She extended her hitting streak to five games. She has three 3-RBI games this season and increased her batting average above .300 to .306.
- Holzhueter hit her sixth home run of the season – bringing her back even with Fitzgerald for most on the team. She posted her fifth multi-hit game of the season. She brought her batting average back above .350 to .351.
- Holmes hit her first collegiate home run and was hit by a pitch for the first time.
- Weinberger extended her hitting streak to four games and his hitting a career-high .412 so far this season. She hit her first home run of the season.
- Krueger hit her first double of the season and the fifth of her career. She was hit by her conference-leading 12th pitch of the season.
- Porter picked up her fifth win of the season and tied her season-high in innings (5.0) and relief innings (5.0). She surpassed 40.0 innings pitched on the season and owns a 1.41 ERA.
- Gross recorded season highs in innings pitched (4.0) and strikeouts (four). She now has pitched in over 15.0 innings and has more than 10 strikeouts.
- Fitzgerald is on a four-game hitting streak and tallied her 75th career hit.
