St. Cloud State Tennis Readies for Match Against Bethel

Huskies eye 2-0 start to 2025
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (1-0), take to the court this Saturday as they face off against Bethel on Saturday, February 8. The match is set for 3:00 p.m. in Rogers, Minn.

Last Time Out
The Huskies opened up their season last Friday as they took on Minnesota Crookston.
St. Cloud State captured the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Crookston took the first match as they came away with a win at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell picked up a 6-3 victory as each team now held a doubles win. At the No. 1 spot, Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki battled against Daniela de Lucas Rivera and Asli Oktay, but would ultimately come away with a 6-4 victory as St. Cloud State would lead 1-0.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Minnesota Crookston won the first three matches in straight sets as they would now lead 3-1. At the No. 5 spot, Lara-Maria Schaefer got the comeback attempt started for the Huskies with a 7(7)-6(1), 6-3 win. Johana Brower kept the momentum rolling for the Huskies as a straight set victory in the No. 2 spot tied the match at 3-3. The deciding point would come down to the No. 6 spot where freshman Gibby Chapman took on Abril Manas Hernandez. Chapman took the first set 6-3, but Manas Hernadez responded with a 6-4 victory in set two. With the match and game on the line, Chapman came up big for the Huskies with a 6-2 victory for her first collegiate victory. The Huskies started the season in the win column with a 4-3 win against Minnesota Crookston.

Scouting Bethel
The Bethel Royals will be opening their season this week as they take on Wisconsin-Stevens Point for their season opener before facing the Huskies on Saturday. The Royals are coming off a 2023-24 season where they went 18-4 with a 7-3 conference record. BU reached the MIAC playoffs where they beat Saint Benedict in the quarterfinals before falling to Gustavus Adolphus in the semifinals.
The Royals return a bulk of their lineup from last season including Julia Baber, Lauryn Douglas, Courtney Nuest, Michaella Sullivan, and Emma Thole. Baber went 17-5 in singles with a 14-8 doubles record. Douglas totaled 15 singles wins with 17 doubles wins. Nuest went 17-2 in singles with an 8-12 record in doubles. Sullivan led the team in total wins with 36, 18 from singles and doubles. Thole registered a 14-6 singles record with a 15-7 doubles record.

Head Coach Drew Fernelius enters his 13th season with the Royals in the 2025 season. He has guided Bethel to a 171-78 record in his tenure while being a three-time MIAC Coach of the Year.
