SCSU Wrestling at NCAA Division II Championships - First Day Results

At the end of the first day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Division II wrestling championships, the St. Cloud State University wrestling team is in fourth place and the Huskies will have four wrestlers alive in competition on championship Saturday at the two-day tournament being held in Cleveland, Ohio this weekend.

After the first day of competition in Cleveland, the Huskies are in fourth place in the team standings with 35.5 points. Â Notre Dame (OH) leads the pack with 44.5 points after day one, while Nebraska Kearney is in second with 41.0 points and Lindenwood is third with 36.0 points. Â The remainder of the top 10 includes Maryville with 33.0 points, Ouachita Baptist with 33.0 points, Central Oklahoma with 28.5 points, Pitt-Johnstown with 27.0 points, McKendree with 26.5 points and Indianapolis with 26.5 points.
SCSU's Gabe Fogarty (165), Austin Goergen (285), Jay Hildreth (149) and Clint Poster (157) have already gained All-America status and will continue wrestling on Saturday, March 15 in the final rounds of the tournament.
Hildreth and Poster have both advanced to the semifinals in the championship bracket of their respective weight classes, while Fogarty and Goergen are still alive in the wrestleback rounds. Â Of note, this is a double-elimination tournament and the action in Cleveland will conclude with the final rounds on March 15.
List below are the results for the Huskies from each round of matches on March 14. Â Of note, Poster and Hildreth are 2-0 in action at the NCAA tournament, while Fogarty and Goergen both own 2-1 records.
Of note, the Huskies have finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Division II championships for the last three consecutive seasons under the direction of head coach Steve Costanzo.
Third Round Results for the Huskies on March 14
125 - Tanner Johnshoy ended his run at the NCAA tournament with a 6-2 loss to Garrett Evans of Ouachita Baptist. Â Johnshoy completed his rookie campaign with a solid 27-13 record.
165 - Gabe Fogarty continued his march in the wrestlebacks with a pin at 1:49 against Mike Emery of West Liberty. Â He will continue his run at the NCAAs with a wrestleback quarterfinal match against Dimitri Willis of Maryville on March 15.
285 - Austin Goergen opened his first wrestleback match with a fall at 4:04 against Chris Giddens of UNC-Pembroke. Â He will continue in tournament action on March 15 with a match against Josh Duplin of Pitt-Johnstown.
In the Second Round, here are the results for the Huskies in Cleveland:
125 - Freshman Tanner Johnshoy stayed alive in the wrestlebacks with a 9-8 decision against Skylor Davis of Simon Fraser. His next opponent will be Garrett Evans of Ouachita Baptist in the wrestle backs.
149 - Jay Hildreth advanced to the semifinals in the championship bracket with a big 5-2 win over James Martinez of Colorado Mesa. Hildreth will wrestle in the semi's against Edwin Copper of Upper Iowa on March 15.
157 - Clint Poster became the second Husky to advance to the semi's with a 23-6 tech fall (6:38) over Mitchell Means of Fort Hays State. Poster will continue his run in the championship bracket with a match against Notre Dame's Jonatan Rivera in the semi's on March 15.
165 - Sophomore Gabe Fogarty advanced in the wrestlebacks with a pin at 3:05 against Matt Addington of CSU-Pueblo. Next up for Fogarty in the wrestlebacks is Mike Emery of West Liberty.
174 - Clayton Jennissen suffered his second loss of the tournament with a 2-1 decision against Josh Rodriquez of Fort Hays State. Â This completes Jennissen's run at the NCAA championships.
285 - Austin Goergen in the quarterfinals lost a 15-12 decision against Jacob Mitchell of California Baptist. Â In the wrestlebacks, Goergen will match up against Chris Giddens of UNC-Pembroke.
