St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team hosted Northern State University in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader at Selke Field in St. Cloud this afternoon. The Huskies defeated the Wolves in both contests, winning game one 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth and clinching game two, 5-1.
The Huskies improve to 13-25-1 overall this season and are now 7-14-1 in the NSIC. Northern State falls to 13-27 overall and 6-18 in conference action.
Game One Recap:
The Huskies were unable to score during the first seven innings of regulation, stranding 11 total runners on base during those innings. Senna Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario) was on the mound for the Huskies, pitching eight scoreless innings. Francesconi gave up just four hits during the innings, no walks, and struck out six batters.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.) walked to start off the inning. Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) blasted a line drive at the pitcher to advance Roan to second. Alyssa Coletto (Aurora, Ill.) followed with an infield single. With two runners in scoring position, freshman shortstop Megan Larkin (Winchester, Oregon) crushed a pitch over the left field fence for a three-run walk off homerun. Larkin finished with a team-high two hits in the game.
Game Two Recap:
The Huskies kept their momentum going, getting on the board first in game two in the bottom of the second on a double by Alyssa Coletto allowing Kelsie Fitch (Carver) to score for a 1-0 advantage.
St. Cloud State increased their lead in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI single by Stephanie Roan scoring both Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) and Brooke Klontz (Jackson) for a 3-0 lead.
The Wolves scored their first and only run of the day in the top of the fourth. The Huskies capped off their offense in the fifth as Kelsie Fitch rocketed a two-run homerun with Canova on base to punch in a decisive 5-1 final score.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) was on the mound for the Huskies. Merritt pitched four complete innings, giving up five hits and striking out three while being credited with the win. Merritt was relieved by Rebecca Harps (Yucaipa, Calif.) who pitched the final three innings while giving up just three hits and no runs.
St. Cloud State put together ten hits in the contest led by Tricia DeBoer (Blooming Prairie), Kelsie Fitch, and Stephanie Roan who each collected two.
