Softball Drops Doubleheader to Minnesota State, 1-3 & 1-9

Mankato, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team traveled to Mankato, Minn. to take on Minnesota State University for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader Friday evening. The Huskies fell to the #8 ranked Mavericks 1-3 in game one and 1-9 in a five-inning game two.
The Huskies fall to 13-27-1 overall and are now 7-16-1 in the NSIC. Minnesota State University improves to 40-8 overall and 24-2 in conference action.
Game One Recap:
Minnesota State got on the board early, scoring in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Huskies got the run back early in the top of the third on a homerun by Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.). The game remained tied at one all until the bottom of the sixth as the Mavericks scored two runs to take a 3-1 decisive lead.
St. Cloud State put together three total hits in the game, one a piece by Tricia DeBoer (Blooming Prairie), Roan, and Megan Lehnen (Burnsville).
Senna Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario) was on the mound for the Huskies and the pitcher of record, pitching six complete innings to give up nine hits and striking out three as the Huskies fell 1-3.
Game Two Recap:
The Huskies were unable to put a stop to the Maverick offense early in game two as Minnesota State put three runs on the board in the first inning and four in the second.
St. Cloud State scored their lone run in the top of the fifth as Megan Lehnen hit an RBI single to score Brianne Hightshoe (Iowa City, Iowa).
The Mavericks put two additional run on the board in the bottom of the fifth for the eight run rule to take effect, ending the game with a 9-1 final score in favor of Minnesota State.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton) started on the mound for the Huskies, pitching 3.2 innings before being relieved by Rebecca Harps (Yucaipa, Calif.). Harps pitched one inning allowing two runs to score.
St. Cloud State will return to action tomorrow as they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to take on Concordia-St.Paul at 1 and 3 p.m. This will wrap up regular season conference action.
