Softball Splits at Concordia-St. Paul: Falls 0-5, Wins 11-10

St. Paul, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team took on the Golden Bears at Concordia-St. Paul in their final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match-up of the season. The Huskies split in the series vs. the Golden Bears, falling 0-5 in the first game and coming back to win 11-10 in a ten-inning game two.
The Huskies finish their 2014 season with a 14-28-1 overall record and finished with an 8-17-1 mark in the NSIC. Concordia-St. Paul moved to 18-32 overall and finished at 13-17 in regular season conference action.
Game One Recap:
Concordia- St. Paul took a quick lead in game one, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. The Golden Bears added one additional run in the bottom of the fourth to secure a 5-0 victory in game one.
The Huskies put together just five hits in the game contributed by Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.), Megan Lehnen (Burnsville), Alyssa Coletto (Aurora, Ill.) and Kelsie Fitch (Carver).
Senna Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario) was on the mound for the Huskies and the pitcher of record, falling to 8-9 this season. Francesconi gave up nine hits, just two earned runs and struck out six.
Game Two Recap:
The Huskies started game two off scoring one run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Kelsie Fitch. The Golden Bears took the lead back in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs of their own.
Concordia added one more run in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth.
It was an exciting sixth inning for the Huskies as they put together six runs on six hits to take a 7-6 lead. The Golden Bears got one run back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at seven all.
A scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth inning ensued before St. Cloud State put together four runs on two hits and one Concordia-St. Paul error to take a 11-7 lead heading into the bottom of ten. The Golden Bears were able to sneak three more runs on the board, but it wasn't enough as the Huskies finally grabbed a decisive 11-10 victory.
St. Cloud State scored 11 runs on 14 hits led by Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.), Taylor Thomas, Kelsie Fitch, Abby Bunnel (Maple Grove) and Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.) with two each. Coletto had a game-high four RBI's.
All four St. Cloud State pitchers saw action in today's second game with Kelly Franks starting on the mound and pitching three innings. Francesconi was the pitcher of record, earning the win to improve her record to 9-9 this season. Francesconi pitched five complete innings and gave up five hits.
