SCSU Soccer opens season U.P. north

The St. Cloud State University soccer team will open its 2014 season with a pair of games in the upper penisula of Michigan. On Sept. 5, the Huskies will begin the year with a 5 p.m. date at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. The Huskies will finish their U.P. trip with a Noon match at Michigan Tech University on Sept. 7, in Houghton, Mich.
St. Cloud State will begin a new era in 2014, as Gretta Arvesen will start her first season as head coach at the University this fall. Prior to her move to SCSU, Arvesen served as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University. She also served as an assistant coach for the soccer program at Minnesota State, Mankato from 2008 to 2013. A graduate of Creighton University, Arvesen played NCAA Division I soccer for the Bluejays from 2003-07.

• St. Cloud State finished the 2013 season with a 10-7-1 overall record and a 7-7-1 record in the always rugged NSIC.
• The Huskies were picked to finish 11th in the NSIC this season in the league's 2014 preseason coaches' poll.
• Junior midfielder Michelle Cornell, senior goalkeeper Kenzie Hanzlik and senior forward Taige Thoreson have been selected as team captains for the 2014 season.
• Cornell was listed as an offensive player to watch in the NSIC this season. Cornell and Thoreson led the Huskies in 2013 with five goals apiece. Cornell earned All-NSIC Honorable Mention accolades in 2013.
• Junior defender Faith Bila was listed as an NSIC defensive player to watch for the upcoming 2014 season.
• SCSU's top returning point producers from 2013 include Thoreson (5g/2a), Naomi Kolhoff (4g/2a), Cornell (5g) and Kara Espinosa (2g/5a).
• Sophomore Brittany Plombon posted a 1.60 GAA in 18 games played last year in the nets for SCSU. She had 113 saves and three shutouts in 2013 for the Huskies. Senior keeper Kenize Hanzlik was a medical redshirt during the 2013 season. A 2011 All-NSIC selection, Hanzlik currently ranks second in the SCSU recordbook with 23 career wins and third with 13 career shutouts. Her career goals against average is 1.08 and she owns a career .803 save percentage.
