BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The St. Cloud State women's indoor track & field program was picked to place sixth in the annual 2016-17 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced this afternoon.
The SCSU women's team picked up 112 points to place sixth of the 15 teams in the NSIC. The order of predicted finish was Minnesota State, Augustana, Minnesota Duluth, Winona State, University of Mary, St. Cloud State, Sioux Falls, Northern State, MSU Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul, Southwest Minnesota State, Wayne State, Bemidji State, Minot State and Upper Iowa. Minnesota State earned 12 of the 14 first place votes.
The SCSU women had a pair of student-athletes that were selected by the NSIC as Athletes to Watch in senior Sam Sunstrom and senior Patience Yalartai.
Sunstrom, a distance runner from Sauk Rapids, Minn., was chosen as the track athlete to watch. Sunstrom finished fifth in the 3,000m last indoor season at the NSIC Conference Championships. She placed in the top five in the mile, 3,000m or 5,000m a total of five times last season. She also earned All-American status during the outdoor season in the 10,000m and during the 2016 cross country campaign.
Yalarati, a field performer from Bloomington, Minn., was All-NSIC in both the long jump and triple jump last season during the indoor campaign. She finished as the runner-up in each event at the conference championships. She also qualified for NCAA Nationals last season in the triple jump where she placed 16th among all participants in the event in the country. Yalartai was in the top three in either the long or triple jump nine times last season including three event wins in the long jump and another three event wins during the triple jump.
Winona State's Kaitlyn Long was chosen as the Preseason Field Athlete of the Year, while Emi Trost was voted as the Preseason Track Athlete of the Year.

Junior Natalie Gottschalk is competing in the multi-events at the SDSU Holiday Open and Multi hosted by South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. on Friday, Dec. 2. Sam Sunstrom is running in distance events at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. in The Opener on Saturday Dec. 3. The rest of the women's program is at the Chuck Petersen Open hosted by Minnesota State on Dec. 3. Following this weekend's action, the SCSU women are not competing again until after the holidays when the program heads off to the Minnesota Open hosted by the University of Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 14.
